Alternator Options?

I'm about to do the heater hose replacement (under intake), via the "remove the alternator" pathway, rather than taking off the intake. Thinking of just going ahead and replacing the 17 y.o. (116K mile) stock one, while I'm at it. Future plans for boost, so I think upgrading the stock unit is warranted, as well.

Anyone used one of these and, if so, is the upgraded wiring kit necessary?

Do you need a 200 amp unit? If you do get it I would dop the heavier gauge wiring.

I've been through 3 alternators under warranty and another one after before I switched to a 2010 oem unit and it has been flawless. That would be my suggestion. I have a brand new (not rebuilt) pre-2010 stock replacement on my shelf that I bought before I bought the 2010 one. I keep it just for back up.

Thanks, I like the idea of a 2010 oem. I was thinking of upgrading, with boost in the future, but may not be totally necessary.

FPG has these listed for 2010 and the second one is for the GT500. anyone know if it is a direct replacement for the 4.6 5-spd?

To get the 2010 one to fit you might have to shorten one of the terminals in back and you're wire might be a couple inches short. It was a long time ago but that's what my foggy memory comes back with. I didn't have to extend my alternator wire because my harness has been rerouted from stock configuration and had the extra play in the wire, but I have heard others have not been able to reach by a couple of inches. But other than that it bolts right in and everything else lines up.

Just noting if you do go to a larger amperage alternator (200 being common) you MUST upgrade the wire. It's not an option...Well, okay, there is an option...option 1: upgrade wire, be happy, option2: don't upgrade wire, create fire. The stock wire isn't rated for higher amperage levels and that would be at-new.

I went PA Performance with my 200-amp alternator, and made my own custom wire, and instead of a fuse I used a breaker which makes a nice little kill switch. PA has some nice finish options, too, if you want something different than gray.

Great advice. Went with the one pictured in my original post.
