Ok.... me and my wife are driveing down the hwy at about 60 mph and all of the sudden this horrible noise starts. It sounds just like the videos i have listened to with a cammed car and a phaser acting up. I have the livernois lockouts in it though. I instantly threw the car in nuetral and shut it down and called a tow truck. Most of you know im running a Larry H. motor with MMR heads and BBR cams so who knows what im dealing with? I did start the car up for a split second to check oil pressure on my mechanical guage under the hood and it is good. This morning I have pulled the driver side valve cover just to look around and nothing looked abnormal. I also pulled the blower off (paxton novi 2200) thinking maybe it shot shit on me but it spins smooth and doesnt make any racket. The sound seemed to come more from the driver side but I was in a panic state. Any ideas? I leave for California tomorrow (work) and the car sits for about three months, YEAH! This is going to drive me nuts, Im open for suggestions of something quick that I can check today so that maybe I can know the problem before I leave town and freak out for months over this.

Thanks,
Shawn

Blow-off issue? i.e. "surging" caused by boost that should be dumped being blown into the plenum without corresponding load on the engine...

Just a thought...

Other than that:
1. Fuel pressure/pump issues (check duty cycle/pressure)
2. spark - lose COP, bad COP, broken plug etc...

I presume you have VCT tuned out right?

yes, VCT is tuned out. I have noticed in the past week or so that at an idle the car would surge about 3 hundred RPM's when in gear? so the boost would cause a really bad knock/tick sound? interesting. I dont have very many miles on this setup but the past 1k since the tune have been flawless.

Well, if you are getting boost at low-load, the MAF should see it and add fuel to prevent knock, but if it is intermittent/rapid, I guess I could see how it might screw that up and/or the load tables would tell it to ignore it...

So, without some data, I guess I have to say its possible you could be getting a knock from that. I've only ever gotten a momentary surge as if I hit the gas when I sprung a vacuum leak on my bypass valve...

The idle surge thing sounds more symptomatic of a small vacuum leak...

I'd start there and see if you have one and check all the plugs and COPs while you are at it...

The livernois lockouts stop the cam from moving based on oil pressure pretty effectively - there is VERY little wiggle room in there at all, so I don't think you'd be hearing them...

How is your oil pressure?

The oil pressure is great, it jumped rite up to around 60# and then I shut it back off. I just checked the plugs and everything looks fine with them. What is the best way to check the COP's? I will look for any small vacuum leaks as well, do you think that it may be related to the knock/tick that Im getting? Its pretty loud and scares me or I would post a vid but I dont want to damage or further damage anything.

Thanks for the help.

When you remove the plugs to check them, before you do, unscrew the COP and see if they are loose....

As for the knock - hard to say without hearing it...
Is it constant or only when it "surges" or "lopes?"

This to me has nothing to do with that little surge that I mention I have had, this is a constant, scare the shit out of me turn the car off pull over and tow it home sound! Thats what happened.

you havent heard it! I am going to have to tear into it alot deeper, it is a very disturbing sound. It will be awhile before I have time to dig into it and then I will let you guys know what is found. In the meantime I really appreciate any suggestions of things to look for because I am clueless to what it may be......

Did you pull both valve covers off? Its sounds like you possibly dropped a valve? What springs are you running? Do you have bronze guides?

drag car only

If it were me at this point, I would part it out and put in a 572 or something and a big freaking carb and go old school! No AC, no power steering and a FAST system. Good luck Ron!

Im just messn with you Ron, I hope you dont part yours out. I hope to never part with mine but you never know! My description on this is hard to give, the only thing that I have ever heard similiar is the phaser issue. I have the phasers locked out so I dont know.

I did not pull both off, just the driver side as it seemed that is where most of the noise was comeing from. I am running the MMR Stage II heads with the 1mm oversize valves. What would I be looking for when I pull the covers off if this happend? would it be obvious damage?

Well if you think its in the valve train, it may be a similar issue freak had, a broken valve. or you may have broken the locating dowel that locates the cam to the phaser. It's really a crap shoot at this point but if I were you I would not start that car again until you pull the heads off.
