If I do a deal as to meet someone local for a sale I will always offer to paypal $20 in good faith and pay the remaining when we meet. I also explain that if we meet and product doesnt meet my standards, keep the $20... 99% of the deals have said no to this and we just meet and pay. I HAVE been offered more for my parts, if I have made a deal already I'll explain, if deal falls thru, your next, for what I would sell to first first, not what you offered as more... KARMA is a mean bitch!

^^ This-
Anytime I've bought local or sold local I always offer good faith money so it doesn't get sold out from under me. I don't care to pay it to secure the part. I've also asked for good faith money in the past, especially on something I've had several people looking at. If the buyer wants it, it should be no big deal. Likewise, if I back out as the buyer, then I expect to lose that money because I possibly lost the seller someone else buying it by them holding it.

fwiw- I bought from Hufen last weekend, great price, part was perfect, and transaction was flawless.

Hey Guys,

Most of you probably saw the thread, but Limetime pulled the old "bait and switch" on me with a bbk throttle body.

After sending money never got a PM back. Box turned up today and this is what i found:

Completely unusable, gears won't turn, poorly spray painted grey, threads of adjuster were filled with epoxy than adjusted later with pliers destroying the the threads even further. Bearings completely destroyed, different from the one pictured but I see he's deleted those.

Paypal dispute filed and ruled in my favor in part thanks to a bunch of you guys

I hope not; if the math were to be done I bet 98% of the transactions are legit and smooth, it would be a huge shame to remove this function due to 2%.

I understand the sentiment, but it seems too drastic when you consider that all but a few transactions have been positive. The good sellers and buyers really shouldn't be punished for the couple of idiot thieves that have been exposed here.

It's just too bad that there are a handful of desperate idiots out there trying to rip people off. This clown went through all of that planning and scheming to get a hundred bucks or so?!? Pretty sad. :(

Keep up the fight for the good guys. Keep the story of BMW3 & sprchrgds197 alive!

I dont really know a plausible way to avoid that 2 %. Maybe all new sellers should only expect 50% up front with the rest upon delivery, satisfactory part as described. Only that leaves some new buyers the opportunity to screw a seller :asshat:

Hey Guys!

Well, first of all I'm not out of the woods yet but I just got word from paypal that they will refund me after he receives the TB back - I guess they use tracking to make sure that's all okay. Happy they came through on this.

Secondly, I have to thank you guys for your immediate support on this. Not sure how many of you have had to file paypal disputes - hopefully not many - but they require a link to the sale ad. I can't say positively but those early backups on the pics and details from surely can't have hurt. Big time thanks to Makkdaddy and Silverhorse on that as well! I know I'm a new guy around here but really can't thank all you guys enough.

Anyway, hopefully it'll all be resolved civilly and I'll shoot a post over to the Bad Traders thread.

Best,
DC

Your welcome

I agree that I would not want 2% to spoil the for sell threads
It is indeed a risk
But you can mitigate the risks by paying with a paypal account and use a Credit Card
With that said I only have a few posts here but have made 2 purchses for my mods
and will continue to get and give good deals when possible

Just always use a credit card through paypal. You'll almost always be able to get a CC chargeback if you need it.

best way is to have a mod track his IP address
he can change his log on name but track his IP

Also, is tracking ip's pretty easy to do? I'm all for protecting the classifieds, but how much trouble is it to stop the occasional scammer? There's always going to be an element of risk when buying over the internet in a classifieds format. That's just the nature of the beast. Always use paypal, and never "gift" it to get out of the fees. At least then you'll have some recourse with paypal. Maybe you get scammed, but most folks aren't.

I had the opportunity to buy some headers from a guy that hadn't posted enough to use the classifieds... It was a sweet deal and he sounded straight up, but I passed. I just took delivery this week on a set that I bought here no problems. Maybe the first guy was legit, but why risk it.

The mods do a good job for the most part, but asking them to track ip addresses seem a little much. We just all have to make good decisions with our funds.
