I dont mind the loudness but my wife does. It is more the loud raspiness that gets to me. Really drones in the car. Plus, I swear I wake the neighbors when I start up at 6am.

so the X was worse tho right? i'm about to go long tube/off road H/no muffler hahahaha will that be raspy? i'm afraid of what i find out. however, a member informed me that you can get OBX long tubes off ebay for $500 and they come with a resonated h pipe, as well as an off road h pipe.. so i'll let you know (in about a few weeks time, as i start a new job monday) how bad no mufflers, no cats, and long tubes with cams sounds (the cams made it slightly louder with stock header, mid pipe and no muffler) and what the resonated H pipe does to calm down the ricey-ness

let me know what you find out

Yeah, I didnt like the x pipe. It would sound great until you hit a certain rpm. The longtubes sound nice but I definitely hear more engine noise too I think. The header swap was not fun. Did it myself with a jack and a phonebook! I had thought about putting stock mufflers on with different tips. I would have to find some for sale cheap though since I dont have mine. By the way...I appreciate everyone posting some sound clips. I love the corsas...just dont want to spend the money.

AGREE!!

The 4.6 2v and 4v motors also sound really nice with that set up. Seems like the 3v was not ment to have that great sound.

I wonder why?? What are the variables?? Maybe the muffler placement??

think of it like this
guitar has 6 strings, 3 is a multiple of 6
bass has 4 strings, 2 and 4 are multiples of 4

though guitars can sound awesome, its the bass that has that low rumble everyone loves (and yes i am aware that there are 5 and 6 string basses)

also why sixxers, though they can sound pretty badass, have a hard time getting that 8 cylinder note

In reagards to 2V & 4V 4.6's pre S197, the difference bieng the mufflers are under neath the cabin and the tail pipes are long, giving it a deeper tone. The S197 has the muffs behind the axle, this is great for reducing drone but it changed the sound of the Mustang as we KNEW it.

At first i felt just like you did about the sound of an S197 but now that its grown on me, i think the 3V sounds better especially with a lili exhuast work and particularly with Cams. 2V & 4V cammed engines go: Bada, bada, bada, bada. Cammed 3V go: Bagada, Bagada, Bagada, Bagada

3V FTW!

Ive heard this set up on the Dyno, its sounds great, really mean and not nearly as quite as you would think yet very tolerable, OP may want to try that, every one has stock muffs lying around so they can be had for cheap, just need to weld on bigger tips.

Comparing exhaust sounds to a musical instruments octave range is a bit weird. Bad analogy.

I know that their are plenty of variables to a cars sound, my question was in regards to the 96-04 mod motors vs. our S197 3v mod motors. I guess it has to do with the muffler placement.
Ironically I ran into an lx hatchback with exhaust work today on the way home , and I have to say that I really miss that sound.

Doesn't Pypes pr Mac make a mid muffler system for our cars??
Has anybody tried it??

Exhaust sound, like everyone else has said, is very subjective. I have Mac L/T with the O/R prochamber and stock mufflers. I think it sounds great, mellow at cruise but at part to full throttle it is noticeably louder. I am 45 years old and do not care for the "raspy" sound. I purchased new 5.0 Mustangs back in the day, my friends have commented that it sounds very close to a 5.0 with Flowmasters with the O/R H pipe. If you like that sound, this setup might be as close as you will get.

Like a few others, I run BBK LT's, o/r X and STOCK mufflers. I love the setup! It's perfect for me. I used to run an o/r H with MAC a/b's. It was extremely loud and droned like hell. Then my daughter was born and I ditched the MAC flowpaths and installed the stock mufflers on her behalf. Long story short, that was almost 2 years ago and I haven't looked back. Ended up selling the MAC's.

I have since installed LT's with the o/r X. The H was a bit deeper. The X made it more aggressive sounding (sounds great!). Nice and mellow while cruising and pretty damn loud with a great tone at WOT. Virtually drone free and you can actually hold a conversation while cruising down the interstate...lol. Also, there is NO "trumpeting".

IMO it's one of the best sounding setups on the S197. If it was a little louder I wouldn't complain though. I recommend painting the stock mufflers black with some nice tips to keep folks guessing. I get compliments all the time and people asking what exhaust i'm running. I always get a confused look when I mention the stock mufflers.

Edit: apparently this is my first post. Didn't realize i've never posted on here before. Well... hello! ;)

I actually had mufflers welded in underneath the cabin May 2008 thinking the same thing you did. Right now my exhaust setup on my 2008 GT consists of a catted SLP X-pipe, SLP Loudmouth II Mufflers custom welded before the axles, and SLP Loudmouth axle-backs. It's definitely unique sounding, but it doesn't sound like the old 2v or 4v motors. And it definitely doesn't sound like my old '98 Cobra. lol

Anyone hear a video of Kooks L/T, High Flow Cats with an X, and Cervini's Side exhaust (Magnaflow)?
