I think black wheels are good for showing off brakes. Otherwise, I wouldn't want them, and right now they are getting to the point of just being overdone (look up aftmarket wheels for a current F-150, 80% of them are black) especially since the OE's have gotten in on it.
Chrome wheels CAN look good.
I personally have been leaning toward machined and/or painted wheels the last few years.
And that's why I like these wheels I got for my car ('15-17 GT "premium" wheels). They are all painted (powdercoated?). Ford calls it dark stainless, I think it's an awesome color, not quite anthracite, but not plain silver either. Almost like a smoked silver.
