My father in law is going to show my car and we're wondering how some of you remove the rust from the break rotors. I know he could drive it and use the breaks, but there's still a ring from where the pads don't touch the rotor. Is there a safe way to remove that rust, or do you leave it alone?

just take a can of flat black engine enamel and hold a paper behind the rotor/caliper to cover struts and such and spray EVERYTHING, it looks amazing, then take it for a 20 mile drive while using brakes on and off, then go wash the car and spray the brakes well and repeat.

The heat helps bake the paint on, and the pads wear a perfect line on the rotor while everything else stays black.

Are those for aesthetic use only? To prevent rust I mean, or will they improve/effect braking at all?

Not for aesthetic use only, they will improve your braking. They also have a coating on them to prevent rusting.
