I ordered an Exedy Mach 400 for my T3650. Do I need shim for this clutch? Does anyone have the measurements for a stock clutch like this:

I can drive to Summit tomorrow and pick up a shim. The problem is for the car this is going in I have to pull the motor and trans to get at the clutch and I'd rather not do it twice. Thanks.

I installed this same clutch a few months ago and used no shim. Exedy also states that no shim should be used with this clutch.

I know one guy who blew his slave after installing an Exedy 500.

The way to figure if you need to shim or not is to bolt the clutch onto the FW torque it down and measure the finger height of the stock and Exedy.

I used an Exedy PP last year with an ACT disc and I did use a .06" shim.

You don't need to buy a shim if you need to shim it, I've used the aluminum Duck HVAC tape to make mine. Just build up the thickness you need,, trim it round and cut out the holes. Works fine, lasts long time ..

I know other's have used cardboard to make theirs.

What is the stock height? I don't have the factory clutch to compare to.

I've got it written down in a notebook in my tool box but IIRC the stocker measured 3.12" and the Exedy measured 3.06" hence the .06" shim.

It wont hurt to shim it a little even if it's not needed, It just moves the engagement point a little higher but will prevent overextending the slave.

Thanks. I'll have to measure. I have bunch of 0.040" & 0.055" aluminum sheet I can use to make into a shim.

Do not use a shim.. I have an exedy 500. I had a small shim added to mine and it made metal on metal noises. Then I took it off and it was perfect

Hummm,, Not sure what you had going on there but running a shim should not have caused any issues,

Although, I was not a fan of that cheap slave Exedy included in their kits, that thing was considerably stiffer than the Ford OE slave.

I just installed the Mach 400 and an Exedy flywheel last weekend with no spacer. I called their tech line to confirm that no spacer is needed, but still did the measurements using the RAM worksheet.

Great clutch so far.

Thanks for all the help. Got the motor pulled today, new Exedy 400 installed, and motor back in and hooked up. The Exedy pedal feel is very close to stock. I'm quite pleased compared to the Ram that I had in there. Did all the measurements and I didn't need shim. Took my Factory Five Roadster for a test drive:
