Ya, tough call. I'm on the fence there too. I was dead set on doing the Boss block, but people have rattled my cage about it lately with their fear-mongering over the main caps. BruceH made nice gains with his Boss motor and didn't have any issues that he spoke of. I'm not after huge numbers, but I want a built motor to be stout. I certainly don't want the mains to be the weak link. But I'm looking into that issue still, there are solutions.

That 3.800 crank is gonna cost more to make work in either block application. If you don't mind it, it should make some good cubes (301 CID in a 4.6 block depending on piston bore). Look forward to reading your future build!

I'm still running the motor but it hasn't been boosted for about a year. Still runs great. I've been using the car as a daily driver for the last 18 months or so. The max hp I ever had with the boss block was 585rwhp. That was with about 7psi iirc.

Has anyone had an issue with the boss block or is it just a "might happen because some push rod motors have it happen" kind of precaution?

It makes an awesome na motor. If I was so inclined I wouldn't be afraid to really push it with boost. Of course the chance of failure is always going to be there when really pushing the power.

The fear-mongers claim that the 4 bolt main won't hold up. I've looked at the main bolts for the Boss block, and they are certainly beefier in size/threading than any other 4 bolt. But it does give me pause. Not having 4 bolts on the main caps and 2 bolts on the sides does feel like a downgrade in stability. I think there is something to be said in proper torque application too.

I'm still probably gonna do it Bruce, but I am looking into those aftermarket main caps and having the block machined. This is all assuming I even keep the car. Lately I've been feeling the urge to sell off and buy something different. Maybe even sell the car as is, try and get an enthusiast buy.

Lots of bridges left to be crossed :)

It's one of those things that nobody knows for sure. I know I like the aluminum block main caps better and would rather have them but it would cost about 3x what a block costs so the risk reward leaned too much to the leave it alone side.

I've also come to the conclusion that I won't be pushing any more than 550 or so. The times I've had higher levels of power weren't really fun. I would have to be careful passing, taking off, driving in the rain, etc. I'm much happier with the 400/400 or so this motor is putting out right now n/a so all the extra machine work would of been a complete waste of money for me.

I've had the car up to 460/485 on 7psi running e85. It didnt feel unstable at all unless you really get aggressive. It will peel the tires on a 3-2 downshift but I've learned how much pedal it takes to keep traction. I understand 600whp is a different monster, i still feel its something to become accustomed to. I dont drive my car in the rain unless im out on a road trip. But again, I'm rolling a centri blower, so I'm not worried about it anymore than NA.

I'm very content with my current power level, I just want that hidden beast under the hood for those occasional high end trolls :)
