Crickets!!!

If I didn't know better, I'd say I have a nest of crickets somewhere in my car.

Basically on and off I will get a chirping sound that sounds exactly like crickets chirping (but it's 100% not). It is coming from the front of the car and if I had to guess I'd say passenger side, but not 100% sure. I think I hear it on acceleration, and positive about coasting and slowing down. Braking has no effect on the noise until the car comes to a complete stop and then the noise goes away. The noise only happens while the car is moving. Sitting at idle, there are no abnormal sounds. The noise is not overly loud, but noticeable to me since I drive the car every day and know it is not normal.

What annoys me the most is that it does not happen all the time and of course when I brought it to my guy, it didn't do it and I felt like I was losing my mind.

I'm hoping someone here might have an idea or know what is causing this.

Roy - pulley is a good bet, open the hood and get someone to rev the motor while you listen

The pulleys would make noise though even when not in gear, but be quiet at a dead stop?

if it is a pulley it could be RPM dependent. IIRC Ron had a issue like this on his car

Not the same car but my jeep cherokee did the exact same thing and it seemed while moving the load put the pulley under more stress and made the bad bearings squeal.

try listening to each pulley thru a tube so you get a more defined sound area.
i had the same thing, which was intermittent at first and over time it got much worse.
turned out to be a couple bearings in the ider pulleys. i think these are notorious for going bad.
i wound up replacing all the pulleys with a 8 rib kit.

Is your car a manual? It could be the throwout bearing. Get in the car and start it up. Put the car in neutral and listen for the sound. Now, push the clutch in. If the noise goes away it is probably the throwout bearing.

Car only does it while in motion. Doesn't matter if its in gear or neutral. I will usually throw it into neutral coming to a stop sign and you can hear it until the car comes to a complete stop, then silence. What drives me crazy is that it does not do it all the time and comes and goes.

i had the same problem before i swapped out my motor. it ended up being the timing trigger wheel was wallered out and rubbing on the timing cover.

Start with a Bug Bomb, but my bet is an idler pulley bearing. Try spraying some lube on each bearing with the motor running. I has this problem with the idler's provided by Whipple. I had Whipple replace it twice before I went to another brand.

Well, going to try to bring it to my shop again this week and hope it does it for them this time. The more and more I listen, I think it is a pulley.

Someone mentioned that to me today as well since I did the suspension this past spring.

Hopefully this week go down to the shop again with a stethoscope and listen to the pulleys to make a determination on them since I want to do UDP's as well.

**UPDATE**

Spent extensive time at the shop today looking over my car. Still can not find what is causing the noise.

Drove the car, then coasted in neutral hearing the sound. Turned the motor off while rolling and it was still there. At least I can rule out anything engine related.

Different types of pavement/bumps have no effect on the noise.

Checked all bolts to make sure nothing was loose, that was all fine.

Took the front calipers off to clean and inspect them, they looked fine, but I swear the sound is more prominent now

Assuming it is something in direct relation to tire rotation, but not sure what else to check. Thinking maybe wheel bearing or something along those lines, or the brake rotors themselves for who knows what reason.

Anyone have any insight on what else I can look at?

Wheel bearing hub assembly would be my guess.
