Look folks. This isn't all that bad to do. Return your car to stock, that file is automatically saved on your SCT device. Flash your car back to stock. You DO NOT have to run your car. Just turn it off after flashing it to stock without ever starting the engine. Go to your computer and make sure you have your tunes saved in your email or on your computer. If you don't have your current tunes saved for some odd reason, simply download them from your SCT device along with a copy of your stock tune.

Then, do the SCT firmware update via the SCT software already on your computer. The same program you used to save your tunes with. Update the device, then reload your current tunes to it. Go to your car and load your normal tune again. It will save your stock tune again and then load the tune you picked. Nothing to be afraid of.

okay.. so returning to stock now makes sense after your post...

Basically it wipes the stock tune off the device once you update the firmware. So you return your car back to stock so once you re-initiate the tunes it re-saves it. I have my stock tuned saved on my computer. So would it even be needed for me to do so?

However, if you're just changing tunes then it's not needed because it doesn't wipe the device. It all makes sense now.. Thanks Tom! lol

My car was one of the "more than average number of cars having issues returning to stock."

I put my car back to the stock tune at the dragstrip last Wednesday to make some runs with the stock tune. I was having some issues with the tune and wanted to compare with the stock tune. When I tried to go back to the SCT supplied 91 octane stategy tune, my tuner froze and failed, leaving my car inoperable for a half hour while I scrambled to reinstall the stock tune several times before it would take and let the car start. Same problem in my driveway at home trying to do the same thing! So, I called SCT last Thursday and they totally reformatted my tuner when they couldn't fix it via remote access to my laptop/tuner. They then loaded the latest firmware that they are telling everyone to update to now. This took a couple of hours total since they had to flatten my tuner and reformat before updating. I loaded the 91 octane strategy tune back in the car and so far so good now.

There are several of us with SCT issues discussing this at length on another Mustang forum (TMS). This is more than an isolated incident and, hence, the response from SCT with a firmware revision.

The last time I updated mine it took away one of the number of times it could be locked to a vehicle. Pretty f'n annoying considering they charge to reset the damn thing if you run out.

I checked mine after the firmware update was done and I still have the same 5 "unlocks" remaining that I had before the update was done.

Sat there for 20min today waiting for it to update nothing happen the tuner just stayed in update status, said to this update and put
my tune back in, car and tuner never gave me a problem, been reading some horror stories about this update though.

I updated mine and now I am able to flash my ECU again, it did wipe out my Lund tunes I had on there though.

NO..
you do NOT need to return your car to stock before uploading a new tune to the device or reloading a new tune to the car.

however you MUST return the car to stock BEFORE you update the FIRMWARE on the SCT Device (this isn't to be confused with uploading a custom tune to the device)

so in order to apply this critical update, you have to return the car to stock first, update the firmware on the device, then load your tune back to the car

But if you don't have your custom tune backed up on your home computer or in a email you'll lose the custom tune when you update the hand held tuner.
Thats my dilemma. Justin sent me the tuner with my tune already loaded into it.

there's a way to dump that file using a "secret" ctrl-alt-shift key combo inside the update software..
i'm sure SCT can help you there, and/or justin would send you the tune file locked to your XCal's serial number.
