Driveshaft question

Ok I purchased a single piece 4" alum driveshaft off of fleabay about a year ago. The guy said it was off of a 06GT but when I went to put it on its about 2.5" short. So instead of scrapping it and starting over I had a piece of 5.5"OD 7075 alum at work and I am making an 2.750" spacer to put it between the shaft an rearend. I am going to get the whole assy rebalanced once done. My question is the holes going to the rear flange is thru holes and the holes for the shaft will be threaded. Should I get longer bolts and go thru the shaft, thread into the adapter and put Nylock nuts with locktite or just thread them right in the adapter with red locktite? I don't think they will pull out since the bolts will be in shear. Opinions...

Why bother! Just get a proper length driveshaft and skip the headaches and potential funeral as a result of a failed band-aide on an assembly rotating at 7K RPM.

As far as i remember my 08 gt one piece came with a alumn spacer that bolted to the diff then the shaft bolted to it its recessed so the spacer is perfectly centered to avoid out off balance. You sure he didnt forget to send the spacer

Some things aren't made to have Band-Aids put on them…JMHO

Why not find out who makes your driveshaft and talk to them, or take it to a local driveshaft shop and have it re-tubed to the correct length.

Is it worth f-ing up your car (or worse) for 400.00 or whatever it would cost to do it correctly? (just because we can do somethings doesn't mean we should)

When you fully extend the shaft it's still too short?

Yea with the shaft fully extended its 2.5" short. I'm making the spacer on the CNC then going to have everything rebalanced. I talked to Axle Exchange about it and they want 700 for a new one and the local shop wants 800 to retube it. I got the material for free. The guy at Axle Exchange said as long as its centered and rebalanced it should work. I just didn't know if anyone has done this or not. I am making it with male .190" to go into the shaft for centering, a .120" female for the pinion flange to center, 5.00" OD to match the flange, 2.750" overall length, 8 .485" thru holes to bolt to the pinion flange and 4 12x1.75 tapped holes for the shaft to bolt into.

I'm starting to think the same thing. I think that's why the driveshaft mfgs have gotten away from having a spacer in it.

I just talked to Mark at Axle Exchange (owner and AWSOME guy) went over all the dimensions and went over the spacer I am making and due to the pinion angle and length of the spacer it's not going to work. If it was .500" then not a problem but 2.750" will put the angle of the u joints out. Going to shoot this shaft and let them make it correct and new u joints. That's why I like this forum, you focus on what you can do but makes you think should I do it.
