A TOB would tend to rattle when the clutch pedal is not depressed. Howe ever there is a spring in the s197 tob's to keep pressure on the clutch diaphragm so I doubt this is the issue. I would look in the rear of the car. I had two throw out bearings go in super high milage jeeps 110k+. And they made a grinding noise with the pedal up, setting your foot on the pedal would make the noise go away. The clutch linkage was adjustable in this case.

OK, bringing this back to life since I have a similar issue.

Saturday I got a Steeda Adjustable upper control arm installed to correct the pinion angle. Also had the knob in the tranny tunnel grounded out since the 4" powerhouse shaft was rubbing slightly.

Noticed that when i was getting on the gas a bit and pressed the clutch in (foot off gas), I would hear a distinct clunk from the rear of the car. Could this just be sound amplified from the steeda control arm since it def wasn't noticeable before this was done?

The car has always had a loud rear end, even with the factory driveshaft and such with lots of clunking in the rear, this is just a new clunk.

**Just was reading up on the steeda part and saw the thing about the stepped spacers being used after 2007 that prevent a clunk. I have to ask the shop tomorrow if the part was installed. Perhaps this upper was old stock that didn't include that. **

My J&M UCA came with the washers you're talking about. I haven't installed it yet since I'm going to wait until I do a 1 piece d/s. I suspect your guess is correct and it's the bolt moving in the oversized holes.

Spoke to the shop and they said they had the newer upper with the spacers installed on my car. Going down there this week to see if they can figure whats clunking.

I've been paying more attention to the sound and here are some details:

1. It will NOT do it when I first driving, but after a 15 min drive on the highway, when I get to stop and go traffic again, it will do it.

2. It happens only when I press the clutch pedal down and I will hear a "clunk clunk" from the rear of the car. Car rides perfect when engaged.

3. Also when turning into a driveway (left or right turn) if I pop it into Neutral right before I turn, I get the same clunk sound.

4. If I turn into a driveway with the car in 1st or 2nd gear there will be no sound.

5. Seems to only do it when i'm speeding up and going through the gears as last night I turned onto my street in third and dropped it to 2nd and didn't hear it, but at the next stop sign heard it again going up through them.

Could this just be in input shaft noise going through the aluminum drive shaft that I never heard before until I got the steeda upper put in?

I've had that exact same clunking sound with the same symptoms for the past 50k miles. It became very noticeable after I installed my Upper and Lower control arms. I thought I had torqued something down wrong, so I went on a ride in my buddy's stock 08 gt to see if maybe he had that same sound but toned down from the stock suspension and sure enough he did. It was extremely faint, but you could hear it if you were listening for it. I honestly don't know what could be causing this clunk, but it would be nice to find out.

Yeah, what gets me the most is that it won't do it until the car has been running a while/driven a bit.

do you have the OEM UCA mount?

The shop says they installed the new part supplied with the steeda UCA.

What gets me is how it won't make the noise when cold, only after i'm running a little. My friend says maybe tranny is going, but the car shifts fine.

Maybe bad input shaft? I don't see how that could be though, car is never beat on and is not pushing over 300rwp/rwt

I've heard a similar clunk off and on immediately after depressing the clutch whether moving or not, usually I hear it at idle when pushing the clutch in. Don't have a clue what it is?

No info on mine. Brought it in last week, drove around, sounds like its comming from the rear. Put it on the lift, all looks good there. Of course it didn't really do it for the shop. Going to have an adjustable panhard bar done soon, gonna have them listen again then. They think it might be a backlash issue.

I get some sort of clunk when slowing down.... and I have an auto. Who knows what the hell it is. I am thinking it has something to do with the alum. driveshaft. But, it hasnt always been there.

I do have a bit of gear whine when accelerating between 40-50 mph... maybe its related? I've also had some warranty work done on my clutch packs (there is a TSB on it for 05-06).

Mine's too has a clunk when slowing down (around 15mph) next week I'm having new gears, Detroit true trac, and all new bearings put in the car.
hopefully that will fix it.

can you keep us updated on whether or not this fixed the problem.

Honestly, I got a piece of shit gear install job done IMO, so im guessing that is the problem. I just dont know how sever the problem is... I can put up with the clunk, I just dont know if it will ever get worse. It hasnt gotten worse since it started happening. I just tell myself that its a mustang and will probably make some odd noises. :highfive:

mine got worse, I'll keep you updated good or bad outcome.

IMO I don't think it's driveshaft related because I've been having the Powerhouse driveshaft for about 3 years and the clunk started about 3-4 months ago.
I think it's between bad gears (Motives) and bad install= worn out bearings.

The driveshaft was bumping up against the driveshaft loop due to the crappy hurst shifter that was in there. when you removed the center console you could see the play in it when moving the shifter into gear, explained everything, wouldnt have guessed it but the noise is completely gone. Of course changed shifter and fixed ds loop.
