I took a drive up the canyon today with my son and after about 10 mins of spirited driving in the twisties the engine started feeling low on power then immediately the engine light started flashing and then I had no power to where I could barely keep driving at 10mph to pull off the road safety.
I get the car pulled over and pop the hood and the engine sounded like shit sputtering and knocking so I shut it off and we sat there for about 5 mins. During that time I was looking everything over...checked the oil and it was good. It seemed hot but the dummy light on the dash was fine...
So after about 5 mins I tried starting it again before calling a tow truck and it started fine and was purring like normal, so we got back in and continued down the road and the everything was back to normal, no flashing light and power was great. I took it easy for a few miles and it drove fine for the rest of the drive about 25 miles or so...

Did I overheat it and go into limp mode? It's only mid 80's here today and I didn't feel like I was driving it like I stole it... Anything I should look at?

Pull any codes?

Why do you think you over heated it? Pin the temp gauge?

I would have the alternator and battery checked, those have been known to cause wacky things when bad.

That's a weird one, if it went into fail safe mode it would have said so on the dashboard display - when the dealership forgot to put coolant in my engine I believe it informed me that the car was overheating in text. Someone else can confirm - I doubt even the dealership would know. I think there's a light for high temp as well as the gauge?

With just the engine light... transient cam drive issues?

It was weird! The only thing I saw on the dash was the blinking engine symbol... Gauges were all normal and no text warnings were shown.
When I popped the hood it was hot, but no hotter than I would expect it to be after the run up the canyon. No coolant spewing, no funny smells... Just sputtering and knocking...

I have driven the car dozens of times on this same canyon route, speed, outside temperature and never have had a problem before.

Electrical resistance increases with heat, perhaps a coil is having issues. Cheapest thing to do now is a fresh set of plugs which you may need anyway.
