Well I got the old (130K) motor out of the 05 and started pulling it apart to check out what was wrong with it (had a loud knock upon start up) I figured it was a phaser or maybe a collapsed lash adjuster/ bad cam follower or maybe even a tensioner. Well It looks like it was just straight up neglect by the previous owner. I bought the car two years ago with 94K on the odometer from a large ford dealership that assured me that they went through the car and all the maintenance was done and the car was in great shape prior to me purchasing it. Well come to find out it wasn't. Here are some of the pics. Now mind you I am religious about changing the oil/filter every 3K like clockwork. I also found some large chunks of chain guide plastic pieces and what looks like maybe aluminum shavings in the pan. This engine was still running strong and pulled well It just had a loud knock/tick. Also the intake ports of the heads and the valves were spotless. I chalk that up to the 91 Chevron and regular techron I run through it. Also very little oil in the intake manifold. But anyway this is what happens when a woman (the previous owner was a woman)who doesn't care about maintenance forgets to change the oil and runs it WAY too long oil change intervals.

I have only had to change the pan to the old one from the 05 as it has the temp sensor for the oil which from my search is necessary on 05-06 motors ecu to run the vct and the dual outlet coolant crossover from my 05 as I don't have the Y from the 07 that I would need to run the 07's single outlet crossover.

I don't know. All I know is that the oil was in there for much longer then 3-5K miles per oil change.

With the oil running the VCT, ignoring it's change interval is like playing with matches.

I pulled the cam sensor today and noticed the phasers trigger fingers had been hitting the sensor enough to remove about an 1/8th of an inch of plastic off the front of it and take it down to the steel insert. I don't know if that was my ticking noise or if it was a follower. All the followers seem in decent shape considering.

Sounds like that was the culprit to me
