NEED HELP! Finally got some time to look into my mysterious noise on my car and this is what I found. I think this is similiar to what Ron had experienced but I need to know what the best approach from here is on repairing and what else could possibly be damaged from this. The follower popped off and the cam lobe has a very slight groove down the center is this repairable? What caused this in the first place going 60mph down the hwy? Here are some crappy cell phone pics.....

thanks for any help,
Shawn

were these the regrinds or billets ?

I had pretty much the same shit happen to me when the valve broke . If I'm not mistaken we just changed the follower and all for that valve and " polished " the cam . It's kinda hard to tell how deep it is in the cam from the pics but you may be able to do the same as i did .

Also i would check the valve & guide to make sure it didn't get tweaked when it popped off .......

These are regrinds. So you had to change the valvle spring, valve and retainer also? it is not a very deep groove at all and Im pretty sure that it can be polished out. What causes this and when I first spotted it the valve looked bent at an angle but then pushed right over into place and sat straight? Can there be damage to the valve guide?

Are there little washers under the hydraulic "lifters"?
Ron's had 2 per lifter. Make sure the lifter didn't lose its prime by submerging it in oil and pressing down on it till it gets firm and has no air bubbles coming out.
For $10.00 or so each lifter costs I'd change that one .

Well the valve yes but it was the reason the follower popped off lol , fuckin MMR . But anyway no we only changed the follower and I think the retainer but kept the spring. Like peter said they are only like 8-10 bucks at ford . cheap insurance incase it did get tweaked , now as far as the guide i have no idea I'll let the tech guys answer that for ya .

Thanks thumprrr. These are aftermarket heads (MMR) Im assuming the lifter is still stock? I will buy a new one and does it need to be primed or is it ready to go?

Your opinion........ is there any other thing that needs to be looked at for damage on the valve, guide, spring side of things?

Thanks Freak, Im hoping that in my case like thumprrr is saying I just lost prime and the valve didnt get fucked! Did Ron have to replace any valves in his case?

Yes it must be primed. I prefer to prime the lifter first then once everything is installed use a pesticide sprayer filled with mtor oil and prime the whole engine from the oil pressure sender fitting. This way you will ensure that there is a lot of oil up in the heads and the chain tensioners are tight before startup.

Yea all those parts are stock pieces ( mine are mmr heads too ) , as far as ron goes I don't think so I think he did the same as what I stated above just changing those pieces and it was ready to roll ....well until he ran into those other problems with the wiring or some shit .

Ok, bear with me im learning here. The lifters are fed oil constantly then? What is the best way to prime just the lifter first? I am familiar with the bug sprayer method afterwards. Im guessing that the only and best way to do this is to pull the whole front of the motor apart now? UGH:thud:

First you need to remove the sparkplug from that cylinder and use a wooden dowel or something to determine where the piston is.
Turn the engine over by hand till the camshaft is not acting on that valve and the piston is far enough down so that you don't push the valve down into the piston.
You need the valve spring compressor to compress the spring. Rotunda P/N: 303-1039
http://fordspecialtools.com/Detail.aspx?id=767
Once the spring is compressed the follower can be popped out and the lifter lifted out with a magnet.
Put a new lifter in a glass with the hole pointing up.
Add some oil till the lifter is submerged and pump it till it gets firm and releases no more air bubbles.
Reverse the process to install.
Since you have regrinds you should have a washer or 2 under the lifter to increase its height. Be careful when you pull the lifter out not to lose the washer or washers.

Thank you SO much Peter!! Any ideas of where to rent/get the spring compressor? Is Ford my best bet for this tool? I also asked Freak in a pm and awaiting his answer, what is the best way to polish the small scuff on the cam lobe?

Thanks again

Reread my last post I added info to it including a link for the tool.
As far as the scuff goes we just used some 320 grit emery cloth on Rons since that's all we had at the time. If you have 400 or 600 you can try that also.

No valve damage. When the follower popped out the valve stayed shut and didn't hit anything.
