Does anybody know if there is suppose to be any play between the rotor and the wheel studs. I can hold the wheel studs stationary and move the rotor about a 1/8 of an inch fore and aft. Reason I am asking is I get a clunking noise when I release the brakes with the car in drive and this might be the problem.

Yes, the holes in the rotor are larger than the wheel studs. After you put the wheel on and tighten the lug nuts that play won't be there anymore.
As for the clunk noise have a helper outside the car to listen for the noise to see if it's coming from the front or back, help pinpoint the source.

The clunk you are describing is probably your sway bar end links or your stut mounts. Both of these are common issues with the S197 cars.

Did you go to aftermarket rims? If so did you take off the little retainer clips that were originally on the studs holding the rotors? I know you are supposed to take them off for aftermarket rims to sit flush with the rotors.

No after market rims. How many retaining clips are on the rotor, because I have 1? Thanks for all the replies. The noise is definitely coming from the front of the car. If I let off the brakes real quick I hear the clunk. If I slowly let off the brakes I don't get the clunk. I will check the sway bar end links and stut mounts. What should I be looking for on these and what are the common issues?

Yeah...if I remember correctly there is just one on each rotor. Usually the strut mounts do it when turning though so I doubt it's that from when you let off the brake.
