Finally able to get my car out to Grandsport Speedway (Hitchcock Texas). Blue cars were $75 off regular price!
Ran the track in the summer without the intercooler. Big mistake! After two laps the power fell on its nose and water temps over 240*. Then again, this was in 100*+ Texas heat! (long story why the intercooler wasn't run that day).
Fast forward to last week. Cool 62* day with sun. Pull into the track and what do I see? A sea of Mustangs!! Oh yeah! The Beaumont Wild Horse Mustang Club was there to open track their cars.
The track is a small but very technical layout with two sections with speeds attainable over 110mph. Not an autocross nor full out open track course. Fun stuff.. that's about how you could descibe it!
Drove the daily driven Vortech V-3 '06 down - ~80miles one way. 93 octane in the tank. Ferodo brake pads (3k miles on 'em). Goodyear F1 tires (once I lowered the pressure to 38psi hot, they really gripped hard).
First session had me in a happy place. With each lap, a quick look at the digital temp guage broadened the smile. 197*, 197*, 198*... you get the picture. Almost ran over several "Legends" cars so they pulled me from their group to run with the "Silver" group. (see video and listen carefully at the beginning for advice from the race director.. lol!)
After running all day, it was time to pack up and head home. Tires looked as they did when I arrived. Brake pads showed no sign even close to needing replaced (hardly any brake dust on the wheels).
Check out the video. I didn't leave much on the table in the trim the car was in... as I drive it every day <70miles RT> to work/home.
Yes, the intercooler made a huge performance impact . The only reason I don't run it all the time is the annoying chirping when shifting and higher rpm maintenance throttle bucking (yeah, a blow-through setup would fix all that).
Wallet is not puckering at all. $150.00 total for six 15min sessions. Doesn't get much cheaper than that for 1.5hrs of track time.
