So I pulled my keys out of my pocket today, and the loop at the top of my key had separated from the rest of the key. Can I just drill a hole in the black plastic and stick a key ring through that?

I'm concerned that there is a chip of some sort in the black plastic.

I guess I could try it and see if it works b/c I have a couple spares, but I'd like to know if I'm wasting my time.

[Feel free to tell me to stop being a cheap bastard.]

That's happened to me on more than one occasion and I just use Super glue to put it back on.
There's indeed a programmed chip inside the body of plastic and drilling through it would be a bad idea. It would be better to buy a spare key and keyless entry fob and have them programmed.

Thanks, Dino. I have a spare key that I had to buy almost as soon as I bought the car. I accidentally locked my keys in the car at a dealership.

If you have 2 keys that work just buy a new blank and program it yourself. Then you could drill the broken one and you would still have 2 working keys, maybe 3...
Just don't get down to only 1 ya cheap bastad!
