They're called "socket lugs", and they're garbage. So are the capped acorn lugs in the other pic.

Spline drive = Troubles over.

Really? You're the first person I've ever heard claim that McLeod lug nuts are garbage. Why would you say that?

I personally think spline lugs are a pain in the ass, sort of like having locking lugs. You need a special socket to remove them and if you lose it then you're fucked. I refuse to use locking lugs because it's just a matter of time before it costs me unnecessary expense getting them removed without the key. I think splined lug nuts can easily fit in that same category.

At least with mine all you need is a 3/4" socket, available in almost any mechanic's toolbox. And McLeod lugs have an awesome and well earned reputation for quality. I think your claim of them being 'garbage' is way out of line.

Those acorn lugs in the second picture are the Ford OEM 13/16" lugs. They have a stainless cap over a steel lug. And yes, they're crap. The reason I say that, is the stainless cap/cover over time becomes loose, and gets dented, and scuffed, and really becomes unattractive. And they're big, bulky and heavy. So I'm sorry you feel my opinion of them is out of line, and I think it's spelled "McGard".

With that said, I agree with you about locking lugs. I think they're a huge pain in the ass. Spline drives, on the other hand, aren't nearly as bad. "Most" spline drives share the same splines. So finding sockets are relatively easy. I have two of them, one in my car, and one in my tool box. No big deal. Considering their much better appearance and better fit/finish, it's well worth it.

My bad. I thought you were saying the lugs I posted were crap. Yes, the stock lugs will separate and wallow out after repeated use. My stock lugs got to where they would stick in the socket and I couldn't pull them out. The McGard lugs are great.

I was half asleep when I posted that last night, hence the misspelling.

I use the stock acorn lug nuts, and keep a stock of them around (they are dirt freaking cheap from Tasca/online take offs, etc...) in case they do get kind of pounded out.

I spray the inside of the socket I use (13/16"? impact socket on my 1/2" drive,) with WD40 and make sure that the socket is all the way down on the lug nut before I apply torque.

The only reason mine have ever buggered up is because of the dealership hammering them on and off with an impact. If you have the wrench all the way on and don't go to 150+ lb-ft the nuts won't deform.

I haven't had great luck with aftermarket lug nuts. Most of them are chromed (are McGard's?) and the finish typically starts chipping off, then you get rust, and.. yuck.

I swap my wheels every other weekend for the drags, so my lugs are constantly being torqued. And my chrome spline drives have held up perfectly. I'm on the same set for over 2 years now. I even ground off the capped ends of 10 of them to run with my 3" studs, and they're still perfect.

Go to discount tire and get a set of spline drive lug nuts for your car. Problems will all be gone.

I got 19mm (3/4) lugnuts OEM style from ebay a long time ago, gives me nice clearance for the socket and works better with my jegstars.
I think I paid 25 bucks for 20 of them.
My car came with the bigger 21mm lugnut.
