This didn't seem tech specific enough, since it's more of an information gathering, rather than a thread on a tech installation, so I hope I'm good posting here.
I've spent countless hours searching, both this forum, and burying my head thru Google, so as to not be asking a dumb, often asked question. I haven't really been able to learn specific options or installation methods for cleaning up my stock 11 GT's fog lights.
I know I definitely want a halo or angel/demon eye effect. The fact that they're bright even during daylight is a plus in my opinion.
I've looked at Raxioms, and even their smoked version still seems to "bleed" a lot of light onto the reflector which isn't an effect I want. I don't really care how effective the fog lights are, I just want tightly delineated halo's with no light coming from the center, or bleeding into the center, if possible (and legal?).
What I'd like to end up with is some kind of LED halo in the fogs that have the same color temp as my stock HID headlights. I just don't want the big ass incandescent bulb with it's odd yellowish light clashing with my HID's. But, and here's where I'm stuck, I'm trying to figure out how to get a true halo, with absolutely no light "bleeding" into the reflector. Can I get away with just painting the reflector a flat black? That doesn't make sense, since it will heat up much, much more than the stock reflector. Can I paint them black and just remove the stock incandescent bulb without error codes or breaking laws?
As retarded as this might sound, what I'm visualizing in my head (but don't know if it's street legal in CA) is my fogs with the whole reflector housing either painted black, or smoked chrome, so that almost no light can emit from them except for the halo. I don't really need fogs. I live on the coast in the most foggy town of all of California and my vision is fine with my HID's alone. So, I think the fog's can be utilized only as esthetic items. I definitely want to keep the fogs, just not with the incandescent.
So, if anyone can share any links that I might have missed, or throw any knowledge my way about the how-to's and legalities of blacking out a fog light so that only a LED halo ring shines, I'd really appreciate it. I've looked at Raxiom and haven't been impressed. Oracle looks like they can make what I want, but I want to learn about blacking out the reflector of the fog light before I jump into anything stupid or illegal.
This is my pathetic, at the gas station but decent overhead lighting shot of the front of my otherwise stock front end.
