Man I wouldn't drive it like that....any codes? My mysterious ticking/knocking sound was loose plugs. I'd start at plugs and work your way up.

Sounds like a cam phaser. They run off of oil pressure, and at low rpm/idle maybe your oil pressure is dropping too low, caused by a weak oil pump. Need to check oil pressure with a mechanical gauge.

Ok will check oil pressure while at low rpm, we thought it was the phasers as well and I had my old ones replaced

I would pull the pugs and if all looks good with them and the oil psi, I would start to look at the lash adjusters since the phasers have already been replaced.

My vote is cam phaser caused by low oil pressure.
Start simple...check oil level.
What are your recent mods? Or recent activity? Oil change? Spark plugs?

Pull the valve covers, unbolt the vct and check the screen filters for black build up, then check your chains for proper tension. This will check off 2 possible problems without costing you anything.

I have replaced the vct sensor and has new phasers and chains including guides I might do the phaser lockouts and bypass the vct and see if that works like in the link Synyster06Gates posted at this point it cant hurt to try will order from BBR including a tune from them.

If your getting the BBR lockouts don't follow the instructions about removing the spring. I did and it wrecks the phaser, Called them up and they said "oh you must have the old instructions" I just bought the dam things. If you have the new phasers on already it's a little more challenging to put the lockouts in as you have 2 bolts that are under pressure from the spring. Use a C-clamp to hold the spring in position on the bolt to be removed and then take a bolt and thread it in from the front side, no you can remove the C-Clamp and rotate the cover to install the lockout. Then after you close the cover you can start the bolt and put the C-Clamp back on till it threads through.
Then again if you have your old phasers still around put the locks in them and leave the new ones as is for backups or if you ever want to go back to working phasers.
