Piston Alloy 4016 vs 2618(Failures, Thoughts, Cold-Start etc)

Which one do you have?

Explain your experiences.

Ill start 4032, small crack let to piston failure. No piston slap during cold starts. Tolerances very tight. Fuel detonation Failure.

I run 2618 alloy 15cc diamond pistons on my turbo setup. 9.1:1 compression and I run 12:1 wot afr, no issues. No piston slap, I do run 10w40 oil in the motor though.

First built motor had the leftover Saleen/CP 4032 pistons at 9.4:1 cr. PTB was .002". Max boost was 17psi with a 2.3 Whipple. The motor ran great. The tune was always conservative with respect to spark advance except when running E85. A/F was usually kept around 12.0. Upon teardown the pistons looked fine.

Current motor has Mahle flattop pistons. They are also made from 4032. PTB is .0015". It's seen a max boost of 10psi. No issues. The heads were recently removed from the motor and the piston tops look fine. Cylinder walls look good too.

I chose 4032 on purpose. I've done alot of things with my builds that aren't "correct" but so far there haven't been any issues. I've also never pushed the envelope. Max hp with the cp pistons was 599. The current motor has seen a max of 570rwhp. If I was going all out 2618 would be the only choice.

Mahle 4032 16cc pistons, max boost of 19psi on a Whipple 2.3. No problems, no piston slap of course and running Mobil 1 10w30. This is on my Mach 1 however. Next go around will be a set of Diamond 2618's for an all out build.

When I decide to build the S197's motor, I'm gonna stick with the Mahle pistons for a budget build. The car will never see north of 600whp.

CP 4032 Saleen pistons with no problems so far. Max so far is 30.8lbs of boost on E85 with 10.8 AF and 24 degrees of timing. Made 888rwhp and 879rwtq with no problems with a safe tune on the rich side.

Livernois 4032, 661hp on 93 pump. 16PSI. 17 degrees timing....no piston slap!

Old motor was JE 2618, lots of cold start up noise I assume was piston slap.(oil pump failure)..... Pistons had a little skirt rash when I removed the.

Motor 1 Cp 4032. 10.5:1 Hole in number 3 at 15 PSI 640 rwhp

Motor number 2 Cp 4032. 9.7:1 hole in number 7 at 18psi.

Motor number 3 diamond 2618. 9.1:1 no holes. Haven't tuned it yet

The failures of motors 1 and 2 are mysteriously unexplainable.

ringland failure @ about 10k miles! 15-17psi on a WOT pull.

Switched to Manley 2618 pistons and so far so good

The Mahle are coated and come with rings. If I had my choice I'd use the Mahle pistons but there isn't anything wrong with the saleen/cp pistons either.

I'm still running the Mahle two years later without a hiccup. They have seen 699 real rwhp meaning uncorrected numbers. Last year when I pulled the motor and swapped heads the pistons and bores looked good. The motor is coming out soon so I'll get another look at them.

My new build is using 2618 because that was all I could get in a 3.7" bore. They had to be semi custom made by Diamond for the bore x stroke combo I wanted with a 3v relieved flat top.

i use from .0035" to .0045" depends on the piston brand, aplication and spec sheet

I dont know what all ya'll are talking about, op was asking about 4016 and 2032. I run the 2032 over the 4016, the added zinc adds to the tensile strength and I dont have to run a SL high zinc oil with them to keep wear down.






Kidding aside, I run Diamond 2618, -14cc, top coated. I chose a rotating assembly from Livernois and they told me they were getting away from Mahle 4032 to go to Diamond 2618 and I said ok. Clearance is set at .004" and no noise on startup, this motor is quieter than the stocker ever was.
