Broke dafuk down
So I will be installing one of these per the recommendation of Lito and Bruce. But I have one concern. I have read in other threads where the Trickflow gear set partially engages the key-way.

Has this gear set been used in high power motors with stiff valve springs?
I really don't want to ruin my twice built motor. sigh

Wondering if you can mark the stock gear set and just use that one?

Mine handled 750 on the blower plus 150 shot of nitrous...

The keyway fully engaged the gears on mine. I could have a modified, longer crank keyway though, Idk if my builder might have done that.

I didn't modify the TF gears at all on mine

Mine are surviving 630/590 being drag raced and put on the two step multiple times each week. No modifications to mine.

Oh snap, I should have taken them to my builder to match the gears. oh man...too late now. :(

I guess I will have to see what mine will look like.

It seems like the design is rock solid on them. I imagine there are several other components that would break long before these gears.

I'm not say the gears will break, I am more concerned with the key way engagement.

I have read several threads where it described only half the gear engages the keyway; thus some people have welded or pinned the gears together.
The passenger gear will get full engagement while the driver side gear will be partially engaged in the keyway. Since they are two piece, makes you wonder about the driver's side.

I have not seen how mine will end up as I am still waiting for my short block. But I would like more info on this. Hopefully I am worried about something that I shouldn't be. lol

Did you modify the TF gears at all?
And what do you mean "handled" past tense...? Did it fail?

What are you running now?

Going with higher compression custom pistons and bigger blower now. Gears and key way were fine. Even when used with 2 step at 600+

I have no concern running the tfs gears nor have I heard of any failures

So just to be clear...your gears are totally stock? You have not pinned nor welded them?

What crank are you running?

Another thing, I double keyed my crank...I wonder if that is going to affect my gears. sigh

The ones with issues are the 2v cranks I believe. Only half of the back gear is on the keyway. Not sure if the 3v cranks are that way but the keyway seems to come back pretty far

You can do it, but you may have to modify the TF gears

MHS has an article about pining the gears. It looks like they're working in a 2v though.

Cam Degree (scroll down toward the bottom)

Also different cranks might be different i.e. Kellogg has different (less) threads than OEM.

I hate to highjack this thread, but I guess its relevant info...

I don't think I will be able to use these gears with my double keyed crank shaft...

As you can see, the key slots in the gears are not 180 degrees apart.

My only saving grace is if the 2nd keyway is not as long as the stock one.

is there any way to just not use one of the key ways? leave it open and use the designated one to align the gear?

You'd have to slot the gears once you knew which one you were using.

I think you can remove the keyways. If that's the case you can remove one of them then use the gears

Mine are as they come from Trickflow. They have been fine at 900+ rwhp and 7500 rpms.

My crank is double keyed as well. I just install the second key after the sprocket and relucter wheel are installed.

Okay, car is finally all back together. I can't get my intercooler pump to prime at the moment though so that's on the list for after work today,
