Make sure you clarify your racing with your insurance companies. If all you said is, "Am I covered if I am drag racing" instead of, "Am I covered for car racing at a facility specifically designed for such racing....NOT street racing....and get injured in a wreck?"

Or words to that effect. When I was racing my motorcycle on the weekends on a track in California back in the early 90's, I had that type of conversation with my vehicle insurance guy. He thought I was talking about street racing. Once I clarified it was at Laguna Seca Raceway, he gave me the correct rider on my policy to cover me.

That's a very good point! Honestly insurance is what holds me back from hitting the track more frequently. I really should do some homework so I can have peace of mind and go enjoy my car. Just don't want to loose everything if I were to wreck, and I'm sure plenty of guys in this thread with much more in their cars than I have understand that lol.

Yeah with both the health insurance and the auto policy, I was very honest and thorough in explaining it. I mentioned it was a Test and Tune, non commercial, 1/4 mile at a NHRA sanctioned track. I told them how I had to wear whatever safety gear tech told me too (Helmet, flame retardant jacket.). I do have GEICO and I am in NJ. NJ is a terrible state for anything auto insurance. GEICO said it would not be covered and there was nothing they could add to cover it. Same thing with the health. Although with the health I found a very confusing sentence that they claim is the reason it would not be covered.

Please read this clause in my health insurance and tell me what it means.

It stated things not covered:
"Automobile accident-related injuries or conditions: Unless NJ DIRECT has been
chosen by the member as primary, NJ DIRECT does not pay for the treatment of
injuries or conditions related to an automobile accident if automobile insurance
could have or should have covered the treatment."
The thing is I did choose to have NJ DIRECT (Health Insurance) be my primary payer in an auto accident. Therefore my auto insurance was not supposed to pay for treatment because I chose to have my health insurance do so.

Its the above part that my health insurance is using to say I am not covered. But it is a confusing sentence. The way I read it, I am covered by the fact that my health insurance is my primary payer of any medical in an auto accident.

I am goin to contact them in writing. I will give them a copy of my auto insurance where they are listed as primary payer in an auto accident. I am going to explain what I want to do(Goto the track). I want it in writing if I am covered.

I just think that the people on the phone are confused about the above clause.

Not insurance, but your comment on stolen trailer/car tow vehicle made me think if this.

Activate when traveling and drop it in the race car in an out of the way spot. If it gets swiped you can real time track it.

Well I called up the health insurance again and quoted the above clause. I was then transferred to their legal department. I am covered while racing, as long as I have the health insurance listed as my primary payer in an auto accident on my auto insurance.

I am still waiting for Hartland to get back to me. I would like to have a 5K deductible policy with $20,000 coverage for on track only.
If and when I get that at least I can have some peace of mind that in the event of a crash I will get fixed and the car too.

Just got off the phone with a Mrs. Walters. She runs the insurance policy for NHRA tracks. She stated that the NHRA medical policy will cover medical expenses for those who have and don't have medical insurance. She stated if you do have medical that will cover it their policy will pay for copays and deductibles. And if you don't have medical insurance or your medical insurance will not cover it, then the NHRA policy will cover it!
Today has been all about good news!

^^^^but you have to be an NHRA member racing at a NHRA track, correct? At least that is how I always understood it. You have to be a member to have your competition license anyway, so it was not an issue for me.

So a $40 NHRA membership is a pretty good deal for a lot more coverage.
Im signing up tonight.

Haha I'm very hesitant to race my car because of this. My car is only worth 15k but I'm in school working oart time I'm screwed if I wreck it at the strip

I found this after looking thru this thread, but didn't look back thru all the posts to see if it was mentioned. i didn't get any quotes or anything, but the site speaks of on track coverage.

not that my car is worth tons of money, but, taking a $15k or $20k loss at the track prevents me also from making many trips out for racing or test and tune.

it's why sometimes i think of selling my car and getting an old fox body and stuffing a junkyard big block in it and go bracket racing as inexpensively as possible, so i won't be devastated by taking a huge loss....not to mention the fact that i like my current stang and don't want to wad it up.
