Would running XL load tires on the fronts only be ok? The tires I'm considering only come in XL for the size I'm looking for the fronts.

I'm think the stiffer sidewall would help in handling as well as protecting the rim from potholes.

Not sure though how it would affect overall handling of the car with regular non-XL tires on the rears.

Nitto NT-555's, like their 255-45-18 and also 275-40-18 have higher load ratings..and rated for 50 psi max. Their 285-40-18 etc, is 44 psi max. All their xl tires in that series have an * next to them. I use their 285-40-18 on the rear..and their 275-40-18 on front with no issues, but I only run 32 psi rear /34 psi front.
