So, being mostly a Bourbon guy myself (Makers mostly, and Bulleit and Turkey in the past), I've not really ever tried to many Scotches before because in the past they weren't sweet enough for me, and I'm just now getting into drinking scotch by itself (or on ice) since I guess my tastes have refined enough to drink something more dry without soda. So, a coworker is kinda getting me into Scotch.

Earlier this week I tried some really good stuff he had (I forget what it was, 58% or so, cask strength 15 year), and MAN it really tasted good on a few cubes of ice! So much more rich and enjoyable than the bourbon that I'm used to! But sadly, that stuff was probably 2 or 3 times what I'd like to pay.

So anyway, I picked up a bottle of Balvenie Double wood 12 year from Trader Joes for just over $30, and I'm enjoy it quite alot! Any other Scotch drinkers out here who used to (or still) drink Bourbon? What scotch would yall suggest to me to pick up next? Something in the $30 or less range for 750ml.

I will periodically pick up a bottle of Johny Walker Blue (when the mood strikes).

For everyday medicinal use, Jack Daniels does it for me...

To each his own, I can't handle Scotch or gin because they both (although differently) taste like medication to me.

I prefer Bourbon as well, Bouliet is great, as is Makers, Knob Creek, a great lesser known one is Elija Craig, ever try?

AS far as scotch goes, Macallan is my favorite, my friend just passed the Bar Exam so i got him a bottle of the 15 yr and we sat down and enjoyed a few glasses on ice, its excellent, they age it in Oak casks that were used to age Sherry, very comlex flavors. Also, Glenlivet is great, Glen Morange if you have the coin, Glen Fiddich, hahaha, pretty much anything that has Glenn in the name.

lol how do you go from JWB to JD they are so different from each other

not to mention light years apart in expense (bottle of JWB at the class 6 is a very cheap $125 while the massive 3 liter Jack is less than $50)...

JWB is nice and smooth and so flavourful... but sometimes I just want Jack to hit my throat... those are the times I usualy get frickin tanked...

The Johnny Walkers are NOT my favorites, they ALL taste like burnt rubber, most irish wiskies have that taste, it comes from a Moss called (pete) that the Irish use in there whiskey's, some really love it, others not so much.

Blanton's is another great Bourbon, single barrell, most others are blended. AN insteresting fact about burboun, the Oak casks can only be used ONCE and then must be destoryed, where as the irish and scottish will reuse their casks many times to get more complex flavors. Burbons also use corn in their mashes to make it sweet.

YOu guys are making me wanna have a drink but i gotta a few more hours to go before i can wet the beek.

but what about beer

Little know fact:

Whiskey IS distilled Beer. Batches of Beer are made and put in a distiller, the distiller heats up the brew, only the "essence" of this brew makes it over the plume, the collected "essense" is then aged in Oak barrels and then either bottled right after or blended till the desired flavor is achieved.

It no wonder that a shot of whiskey is chased to so well with a Beer:beerchug2:

Where to start? Blended Scotch is not Scotch period!!!. The only real Scotch are single malt and the taste of the Scotch will vary depending on where the distillery is located. The northern Scotches are a lighter taste than the southern and island Scotches because of the peat bogs that influence them. Usually the older the Scotch the smother it tastes and it's better straight up than on ice. If you like the taste of the Double Wood then try Glenmorangie Port Wood Finish. Do a little research and try some of the different northern distillers, the southern Scotches are much harder tasting with the peat bog influence.
