Had anyone re-wrapped, so to speak, their steering wheel?

I'm not talking about those cheap ones that you get that just go over the steering wheel. I mean a product that you cut the old leather off and sew the new leather on.

I know there's kits out there for "sew on" ones where they fit better than the elasticized kind but holy cow I wouldn't have the patience to sit and do it..

rewrapping a steering wheel..is work for a real professional . I tried this decades ago, when I owned a Explorer.. waisted hours.. at the end of that day, I went to a upholstery shop. 200 Euros later.. I had a real new steering wheel.

I have another steering wheel, a spare. I replaced mine already like 4 or 5 years ago, but this one is starting to get gross looking as well.

So I can take my time with it off the car and not have to rush.

I guess i'll bite the bullet and just randomly pick a brand kit and let you know how it goes. Unless someone else has any experience with any of them.

I did one of the cheap Aliexpress custom fit covers on my daily. The original leather stays in place and this got stitched over top.
It's certainly not OE quality (or real leather for that matter) but it feels fine and 15000 miles later, it hasn't torn, worn through or slipped. 1000011221.jpg

Man, that looks fantastic. How long did it take you? I'm just running a cheap cover but it's finally wearing out after 5 years.

I've done this to mine when I got it. Did the sewing myself. Got the cover off ebay and ask them to custom make it to look like the GT500 wheel. Car is a 06 GT.
That looks really good! Do you remember the seller by chance?

How does the Alcantara hold up to daily use? I'm afraid it would look like crap after a year or so. Car is my daily driver and I drive a lot.

Thank you very much.
Seller is here https://www.ebay.com/str/mewantofficialstore
While I had it, the Alcantara held up pretty well. Also at the time, I drove my mustang almost daily and it held up for the year until I found my old GT500 wheel. The quality was really nice.

Wheelskins makes excellent leather wheel wraps you sew on over the stock wheel/cover, great quality, I've done a few over the decades & they last forever...it's not hard at all either, takes a couple hours. But I wouldn't try one on an S197 wheel as the wheelskins are thick(ish) & the bottom seam wouldn't work for this wheel.

The eBay/amazon Mewant skins looks nice, but they photoshop the pics to make the 10 & 2 o'clock seams look less bulky, & in customer pics the leather ones look bulky, imho. If they made one without seams on the top half I'd buy one. You can choose the Customize Option in the Amazon/Mewant store & choose panels types, fabrics/leather/colors, stitch colors, center strip color, etc:

I just buy a cover to protect the original steering wheel, and I actually like the bulky, larger feel of it as I have bigger hands, and the grip with the added steering wheel cover works for me. It protects the original wheel, and I can swap it out if I get tired of it.
