I have a built motor with a Whipple, currently running a 6rib setup and shredding belts @10lbs. I ran a string around all my ribbed pulleys to check alignment and everything seems to be aligned correctly, and when I drive normally, there is no noticeable wear on the belt...only when i get into boost and shift quickly at high rpms.

My guess it is because I still have the stock tensioner. So I need to upgrade, but not sure which one to go with. In the future I will be converting to an 8rib setup and will have a race tune on high boost, so I need a tensioner that is going to hold up to 800rwhp and work with the 8rib also once i get there.

I hear a lot about the Thump Tensioner, but it says it is only good up to 500.

Any feedback from folks with experience in this department would be appreciated. Thanks much.

Go back to Thump_RRR's website and look again.

It sounds like you'll be money ahead to just get the 10 rib drive system with those goals... I wish I had!

I would highly go with the thump rrr tensioner. It is very well made and looks like it will handle a great deal of punishment, thing is beefy.

The ThumpRRR will hold whatever you throw at it

there are 2 versions, one is good till 500rwhp, the other is anything over. its beefier, thicker and you wont have any issues

One last push for 10 rib.... how much boost are you planning on running? You will end up needing a crank overdrive pulley, a smaller blower pulley, all new 8 rib pulleys on the accessories, 8 rib idlers, another new 8 rib belt... and end up spending about what the 10 rib setup costs roughly...

I love my thump rrr too, and it will cure your belt shredding issues most likely, but if I had the bottom end in place to hold the boost, i'd go with that 10 rib.

i will be running 20lbs. OD Pulley is on the list already, Smaller SC Pulley is an obvious, and yes, I am aware of everything needed for the 8-rib conversion.

I don't think I will need a 10 rib setup however....8 should be fine. I guess I will find out though shiiiiiit.

What kind of belt are you running now? I've heard nothing but great things about the Gates HD belts (the green ones) so I bought one myself and I personally think it's phenomenal. Holding it's own at 9.5psi on my saleen with stock tensioner...

On my Stroked 302/Whipple 2.3 setup, i run the Steeda dedicated 10rib belt drive. IMO its the best kit out there to run if your aiming for BIG numbers and HIGH boost. No belt slip whatsoever and it cost under what your going to pay for the whole 8rib setup. When i was running just the Whipple on my stock block, i ran the Steeda tensioner and had 0 BELT SLIP at 10psi FWIW.

i was taking into consideration the 10% OD Pulley and Smaller blower pulley the Op stated he would be adding in a later post.

So 550 is what YOU paid for the 8 rib setup, plus the 440 for the OD pulley, and prob about another 150 for the smaller pulley(thats what Whipple charges).. If the math is done it equates to 1140.. The Steeda Dedicated drive ranges from about 1200-1350 depending on boost levels and comes with everything your 8 rib kit came with, just with an extra 2 ribs. i was in the same boat when i did my build and i found that the Steeda Drive was the more practical decision and i dont regret it.

no i paid $550 total. $400 for the 18% OD pulley, group buy at the time, and $150 for misc pulleys i sourced together through rock auto from expeditions, excursions and F350+ trucks. KB pulleys are 60-70 bucks so $620 if you count the blower pulley.

Well i guess thats one way to go if you have the time or desire to search and source down the 8 rib pulleys or just get the Steeda 10rib and you wont have to do no searching and sourcing out. Just a click of a button and your done. To each their own i guess.:thumb2:
