TR3650 leak

I hadn’t noticed until recently but I’ve got a leak under my car. It appears to be tranny fluid and appears to be coming from the bellhousing area. It only seems to be doing it during or right after spirited driving or going over 3-4k. It’s an ’09 with some performance stuff done, but the tranny & clutch is all stock, save the Roush shifter. Any ideas?

is it from the tranny or the throw out bearing?

It's coming from the overflow tube more than likely. There is a vented tube in that area to relieve excess pressure and fluid. Your spirited driving and maybe overfilled transmission would cause it.

More than likely it's normal.

I can't tell exactly where it's coming from. The hydro cylinder needs rebuilt on my lift, so I'll have to put it on jackstands to get a better look (it's not my DD and I've been busy between my two jobs and hobby/job). The overflow was my first thought, but it seems a bit excessive to consistently vent that much. It has 48k on it and I've shortly owned it, so I may just go ahead and drain the fluid to see how much and run some new fluid.

Got it lifted up and I've definitely got a leak. I drained and measured the fluid and it's way low. Looks like an input shaft seal leak. I really don't feel like pulling the tranny, but probably just have to bite the bullet.

I just had to replace a synchro in my trans. It's not a bad job pulling the trans. I did it in 3.5 hours. On my back on stands. Taking it apart isn't that bad either and this was my first time. I recomend get some really long extensions for the top two bolts on the housing. I think I had two 18" two 8" and two 3" with a wobble.

I just had to replace a synchro in my trans. It's not a bad job pulling the trans. I did it in 3.5 hours. On my back on stands. Taking it apart isn't that bad either and this was my first time. I recomend get some really long extensions for the top two bolts on the housing. I think I had two 18" two 8" and two 3" with a wobble.

The best way I've found to get those bolts is from the top. Remove the battery and tray for best access and get both of them from the passenger side. I was able to get access even with a Whipple mounted on the engine by using this method.

Did you take any pics of the syncro job?

I have a few pics. It didn't actully take out the synchro it messed up the slider ring. I have a thread that I will try and post some pics.

Thanks for the info guys. I got it out this morning in about 3.5 hours. I had to loosen up the k-member till it only had 3-4 threads engaged on all bolts. I kept hitting the floor pan at the bellhousing and that was the only way I could get clearance. I got the top bolts from the top drivers side. I haven't disassembled anything on the tranny yet, but it appears to be at the front input shaft still. The only hydro clutches ive messed with was my 5.4 F150 (did a ZF5 swap on it) and it actuates like a traditional cable clutch. Thank god the pressure plate/clutch plate/flywheel looks dry.

Don't usually go to O'reilly's, but they're the only place that had the seal in stock today. Going to try to get this buttoned up tonight after my little girl goes to bed.

Not to hi-jack but I think this could be informational.
My trans started dripping real bad at the tailshaft, do you thing the seal blew or the bearing is screwed too?
I've found it a little wet down there random times when i was under the car but it never dripped till the dyno yesterday, under the car is an oil mess.

Going to bring it to a dealer thursday to have them take a look, I figured if it was a seal I could change it myself but if it's a bearing thing idk what to do.
Found a pic on ebay of the area leaking...

I see there is a bearing in there, looks like a bitch to replace, what kind of repair am I looking at? lol
I do have an extra working 3650 to use if I have to.
FYI, background, the car has an 80mph hard vibe I could never find the cause of, I can imagine that beats on the bearing over the years.

As long as you didn't drive it much I would think you'd be ok. The output seal shouldnt be too bad. I'd go ahead and put a new seal in. Try that before taking it to the dealer.

I have an extra trans I was thinking of building that up internally.

If I am looking at a major repair for this trans I will swap in the working one and just build the one in my car myself.
Definitely need a helper to pull the trans, never did that. lol

I'm unsure as I've never messed with the tailend. If so I'd think a crank pulley puller would work good since it's flanged.

I've always been of the opinion that seals like that don't go bad unless the bearing is bad. If the bearing is good then there won't be any side movement and it won't leak.

Yea I think my 3+ years of that high speed vibration definitely killed that bearing.

You're right, the seals good. Damn my luck the bellhousing is cracked around the input shaft. I'll post pics. I'm hoping you guys think that it would be ok to be welded up, as I don't have the funds for a 6 speed swap and nowhere near me has a bellhousing or tranny for sale.
