Here's the bell taken off and where it's cracked along the edge of where the bearing outer race goes in, looks like there's meat to weld on the outside face of it.

wow...how in the heck could it have cracked?

i had a driveshaft vibe that broke the tailshaft housing on mine, but it's hard to imagine what cracked the housing in the pics

sorry, but i know what you mean. i found a tailshaft housing on ebay and bought it and then had a local shop pull the trans and replace the housing. i thought it was leaking at first around the speedo sensor, so i replaced that hoping that would solve the problem but it didn't

anyway, that's how i wound up with the better dss drive shaft

On a side note what could have caused this? I don't want to have to pull the tranny again. The only thing that I could think of a hard launch, but figured that a broken input shaft would have been more likely than this.

Frank , put the tranny in the basement in. It was working perfectly when we pulled it. Re-build the one thats in the car. There is no sense ending up with two half working trannys.Just checked my notes that trans only has 36200 on it.

Yea I know it's working bro, and glad I got it off of you.
The tailshaft housing is $200 on ebay but that isn't going to get to me in time so if I steal the tailshaft housing off the extra trans I will just replace it down the line.

I am thinkin it shouldn't destroy my wallet to have them just replace the tailshaft housing instead of swapping the whole trans. Ideally I would take it to robs but not comfortable with driving the 45 min over there in this condition. (plus smoking fluid out of the back of my car from burning on the pipes.)

Hope it works out as cheap as you think . I would be scared shitless to bring a tranny problem to a dealership, kind of like an open wallet moment for them.

FYI, background, the car has an 80mph hard vibe I could never find the cause of, I can imagine that beats on the bearing over the years.

Glad you brought this up, I've been having this exact same issue. Are you running an aftermarket driveshaft? I've got a shaftmasters under there now and the vibration has been there since it was installed. I turned the driveshaft on the flange to see if that would help but it didn't change much. It wasn't really bad enough to cause concern at first so I just let it go, but since then I've replaced the output seal once already and now 2/3000 miles later it's leaking again. I'm starting to wonder if that bearing is worn out as well from vibration in the DS...I'll definitely be following this to see what you come up with and if you decide to change it out. Hopefully it's not too big of a pain...

Edit: Nevermind, I see you've already got a thread started on this. :thumb:

Yes I have an aluminum DS but no it's not the driveshaft doing it, I've swapped in the OEM shaft and I have the same vibe in the same place 80+ mph.

I think something aint right in the rear end, pinion preload maybe? it will vibe much harder on decel than accel. Maybe something loosened up I've had the 4.10's for about 3 years now.
