BG is a "dealer service" product line, so you're looking for a car dealer that stocks the SS II. I used the BG website to find a list of dealers then just phoned around until I found a dealer (VW, as it happens) that had it. Easy.

Thanks. I'll look into swapping to this when I do my first oil change, not having any tranny issues but if this helps people with issues it's gotta make mine better.

It's made by BG Products, Inc. in Wichita KS, and its full name is "BG SyncroShift II Full Synthetic Gear Lubricant 75w-80 API GL-4" according to the datasheet. I think that's what it says on the bottle as well.

On that basis, yes, it's a "real" synthetic.

Viscosity V40 = 45.52 cSt. V100 = 8.00 cSt.

As many have stated, there is a big difference in how this car shifts once the tranny is warm. However, for me, that seems to take much longer than the engine. Since it's not a DD, I can let the motor warm-up, but the tranny doesn't really smooth out until several minutes of driving.

Has anyone seen a trans temperature fluid/sender for the manuals? I've seen it for autos, as well as on Camaro manual trannys (from the factory). If I was putting a double or triple gauge pod on my car (a long term plan), a tranny temp would be useful to me.

Is this what you guys are talking about?

I think that my be an older package or older product. Here's what I used:

BG Bottle to Post.jpg

Some day I'll figure out how to get the full-sized image to show up when I attach one. Just click on the thumbnail to see it full-sized.

/\ The black and purple bottle is the correct stuff.

I noticed with the original fluid that was put in my new trans even when warm I would still have trouble shifting into 5th and then to 1st when coming to a stop. With the BG fluid that is not a problem anymore, even when the trans is still cold. It was 25 degrees this morning and it was smooth as butter.

@ Unleashed, JAJ, and Grimace. I have the lower linked product available at my local parts store here in Hawaii. What are your opinions of this fluid? I cant find a spec sheet on their site though. TIA.

-Nick

That is true gear oil, not intended for the use in a manual transmission. The viscosity is too heavy. Normally, you wouldn't find the heavy use of extreme pressure additives in a dedicated manual transmission fluid.

Thanks for the info. On the bottle it said 75-90 gear and tranny fluid and I also full synthetic. I figured it was worth a try since ive used Lucas products before and they performed well.

The viscosity was a good bit higher than Ford's recommended spec for the MT-82

As UnleashedBeast said, it's really heavy in comparison to pretty much everything else we've talked about. Perfect for a truck transmission though.

Can we add a poll to this thread? I'd like to see how many people are using each type of fluid. Specifically the MGW vs. The BG but other popular ones could be added.

so i just noticed Amsoil is no longer recommending their oil for the MT-82

http://www.amsoil.com/mygarage/ProductRecommendations.aspx?FromIndex=1&url2=2011+FORD+MUSTANG+F

Sounds like a vote of no confidence for the MT82 from Amsoil.

Not exactly a lack of confidence...

It's Amsoil's legal team not wanting any part in the MT-82 higher failure rate. The transmissions are experiencing internal failuires no matter what fluid is used in them. Amsoil wants no part in that. The recommendation lists were just recently updated.

Anyone know what dealers typically use BG? I want to change out my fluid but it's too cold and no garage to work in. Ive had difficult shifting into 2nd gear when cold and today it started popping out of gear on me only when cold.
