Answer me this. The Amsoil MTG is the same weight as the QS fluid, so why would I see improved cold shifting when the MTL i'm using now is notchy until it gets warm? The MTL is super smooth during the summer, will I see the same with MTG? I don't want to have the same notchy shifting I had with the factory fill. I'm just concerned since the MTG is a heavier weight than MTL.
What makes the MTG better than the MTL, other than it's the correct factory spec?
Just curious, that's all.

Beast answered that in a pm on svt performance. Has to deal with being a true synthetic and the stock stuff being a lower grade petroleum based lubricant. He may chime back in and get a little more in depth or correct me.

MTL is a true synthetic also. It's just a tad to thin for me during the summer months. I ran MTL all summer and didn't have any problems though.

MTG is closest to factory spec'd viscosity, yet is a true synthetic base stock.

This means that as the lubricant cools, it thickens less than the OEM pre-TSB Ford transmission fluid. This contributes to two benefits....

1. MTG will require less time to warm and thin to the non-notchy state compared to the OEM fluid.

2. MTG will promote a quieter transmission compared to both the OEM fluid and MTL.

It seems that no matter what fluid you choice, there is always a compromise to make during the winter months. Either you have better cold shifting and more gear roll over noise, or you have a quieter transmission and a short time to thin the lubricant to shift smoother.

If it were me, I'd choose MTG and be patient for the lubricant to warm and shift smoother. Obviously, there would not be a compromise in the summer time.

So who here wishes they would have bought the auto instead? lol

A part of me does ... they're even turning better 1/4 mile times. The biggest draw would be having a transmission that isn't a total piece of shit. I do enjoy driving a manual around town though ... just not sure if it's worth the price I'm paying with this car!

My biggest complains with the transmission is when I am trying to drive like an old woman. When I'm beating it like my dog it seems to do what I want it to do.

DISCLAIMER: I do not beat my dog. I love my dog very much and she gets treated better than my GF, lol. Just a figure of speach.

Not me. I will not own a car like the Mustang with an auto, period. If I was too worried about the MT82 to buy one, I'd move on to another make/model. I've bled Ford blue for as long as I knew what a car was but I'd buy a Camaro, 350Z, WRX, Vette, etc before I owned a Mustang with an auto.

Just placed my order for the MTG. Should be here in 4 days or so and will be doing the fluid swap this weekend if it gets here in time.

If I knew then what I know now, I would have refrained on trading my '10 in for an '11 and just went with some big power adders. It's possible I may have even bought an auto...

I will be doing the switch this week to the Amsoil Gear Lube 75W-90 API GL-4 (MTG).
Going to see if it helps any with the gear noise I hear in 2ad while moving slow up the driveway . The car has always had a little bit of a notchy shift 1-2 and sometimes 2-3 .Car has 8000 miles on it ,and other than using about 2 qts of oil,no problems yet .

Has anyone changed from the pre-TSB fluid to MTG and noticed a decrease in whine in 1-4?

From what I understand the 1-4 whine is a lash problem in the intermediate shaft (which is why it doesn't happen in 5th, since that's 1:1). I'm not opposed to masking it using a superior lubricant, but in this case it seems like using a software approach to fixing a hardware problem.

My 2011 has 2221 miles on it, I'll change to MTG in the spring when I get it out of storage and over to my brother's hoist. Just trying to set my expectations...

The whine in my car was due to bearings on the input and couter shafts. No fluid would have fixed that issue. The bearings were not visually worn or damaged, but the shafts showed scoring underneath the bearings. To be clear, my whine was loud enough to drown out my radio and exhaust with the windows up or down. It would be completely gone in 5th only, and only got drowned out at WOT in other gears.

It has been in the 40s here with a few mornings in the 30s, no notchiness or grinds at all with my BG Synchromesh II. The shifter is slightly stiff for the very first shift 1-2 and 2-1, but otherwise perfect.

Grimace, the results experienced with your car are the reason why I tell MT-82 owners to change their transmission fluid immediately after buying the car, do not wait.

That would certainly be good practice. I went about 1200-1500 miles before swapping fluid(after the whine started) on my original trans. On my new trans I went just under 2 weeks or about 100 miles before swapping out the fluid again. There are a few local members to me that want to swap their fluid(all with different brand preferences) and as soon as our schedules align I will have some more useful information to share.

Yeah Mine's been whining since I think day 1 (I for sure noticed it at around 100 miles, after reading up on it online) but it isn't anywhere near approaching even sounding like a quiet blower. It doesn't seem to be getting any louder, and the transmission shifts just fine (aside from the cold temp shifting that everyone else has experienced).

I'm going to try the fluid swap, I don't anticipate any miracle cure to the whine, but I suppose it can't hurt and it's not like it's an expensive thing to try.

Once the blower goes on, if the trans decides to take a dump I'll probably replace it with a Tremec. Of course maybe it'll be just fine like the dozens of other FI cars that are running 600+ RWHP.

Got the MTG today and will be switching out from Redline MTL this weekend. I switched out to Redline in June with 900 miles on the car. I now have 2000 miles and still do not have any whine or grinding problems (knock on wood).

I'll report on the MTG Saturday.

Oh fuck me running backwards!! I ordered the friggin Synchromesh Amsoil stuff instead of the MTG. Went to do the swap yesterday, first day I've felt good in about a month, and checked everything one more time before getting started and realized my mistake.

That sucks.

Tom, why wouldn't you use the Syncromesh? If you don't want it then I'll take it (I'm running Penzoil Syncromesh right now).

Good to hear the TSB fluid worked for you. I would still be cautious using it though. It's very thin and does not have a good base to start with.
