More done today, successfully mated the transmission after getting an alignment tool (it doesn't matter how close it looks, it will not mate unless the alignment of the 2 discs and pilot bearing are perfect).

Down to a short(er) list of remaining items:
-reinstall Z brace
-install AC compressor and belt (how does one do this?)
-install lower body trays
-torque steering column nuts, shaft bolt
-bleed clutch, brakes
-replace ball/socket clamps under exhaust (current ones bottom out before getting any bit tight on the jegs cat deletes)
-complete plumbing of coolant lines, install overflow bottle
-order and install knock sensor subharness
-order and install cylinder head temp sensor
-order and install dipstick tube and dipstick
-order and install larger coupler for throttle body to mate to JLT cai
-trim JLT airbox, build partial cover for water collection
-install cai, remaining front hardware, bumper cover
-fill water
-test fire motor, let idle until temps normalize. rev check to 4000rpm for misfire, drive around block. Check tire pressures, drive home. Sleep after a beer.
-get through tuning with Shaun at AED, get through paint with Phoenix Collision and Custom Paint, and install some gauges.

here are some pictures from today:

install AC compressor and belt (how does one do this?)

1) bolt up the compressor
2) put the new belt behind the crank pulley (ribs facing to the front of the car)
3) put the other side of the belt on the ac pulley
4) use a big zip-tie to secure the belt to the top of the crank pulley
5) turn motor over by hand until the belt is seated
6) cut the zip-tie

*EDIT*

Here are the instructions from ford
http://iihs.net/fsm/?dir=865&viewfile=Air Conditioning (AC) Compressor Belt - 3.7L and 5.0L.pdf

I can see you know NOTHING about dyno tuning.
Not only is it better to dyno tune it is safer.
Might want to read up dynos before you give bad info.
I have used mail order tunes and always had them checked on the dyno.
After a dyno tune it is done.

OP....I also agree on the Boss Long Block.

My automatic stalled on its dyno tune, my mail order tune i run now is better then my dyno tune ever was FWIW.

Sorry to bring up an old post but had to add my $.02.

OP best of luck man, i hate to see new cars with motors that get hurt like this

How is the hood fitment? I want to get mine painted up, but I need the car back first!

fitment is good even with my half-assed install. The fenders need to be loosened and adjusted to perfection, and I'd like to shim the rear of the hood on the mounts to get it just right, but its an excellent match for a fiberglass hood.

The front sits up a bit high, but my grilleset also is a bit shorter than stock.

The guy mentioned he could match your UA color without the car, but my car will require the fenders to be blended, so I'm going under a bit more surgery as far as paint is concerned. I'll actually have to replace my sidestripes, but a good opportunity to get them cut with the original 302R scripting from the grand-am cars.

My paint guy looked the hoods over pretty well and is impressed, so just let me know when you're ready to have it painted and I'm sure he'll do an awesome job at a awesome price.

Sweet! I'm going on a vacation in a little over a week so I was thinking I'd get it painted in a few weeks when I get back. Do you have to get the fenders blended because it's a metallic paint? Did you decide on a paint scheme?

When my hood was installed the shop mentioned they were able to adjust the fitment by loosening and re-aligning the hood hinges where they attach to the body as well. Just another avenue for adjustment.

Definitely. The fitment is 97% good, I just know 30 minutes of work will get that last 3% and would be required for any hood installed.

NSFW language as I couldn't find another word for how long its been or that it fired up so ferociously after so many months.

No blending needed with my hood. It matched exactly :)
