Ok folks, I did a search and did not get a definitive answer to my question, so don't rip my face off. I want to strip the existing wax (unknown brand or composition) off my GT. I have not decided if I will clay bar it but I will be using Meguiar's Deep Crystal Polish and Deep Crystal Carnuba wax. Some posters have used ISA to strip, others strong dish detergent others use Simple Green as clay bar lubricant.

Question- Can I just use a strong dish detergent wash followed by a Simple Green wipe-down to be reasonably sure of stripping the old wax?

I do not have a machine to apply/buff, it will be elbow grease only.

TIA,
Mike

You may get all kinds of answers but I'll say this. NO WAY would I put Simple Green on my paint, not even cut way down.

I use Dawn dish soap. That should be as harsh as you need to remove the wax. Wash it twice if you need to.

As for clay bar lubricant, I use one of the Quik Detailers, either Mequiars or Mothers. I have used a Zaino soapy solution cut with water.

My $0.02

Proof I have a little clue of what I'm talking about::naughty1:

no simple green. Dawn or similar dish detergent is all you need.

dish soap will strip it. then a claybar to get everything out of the paint. Meguiars works well. Try using the mirror glaze cleaner way, #7 polish, #21 synethic wax, @26 yellow wax (gloss)

On a black car, this looks amazing and its cheaper

Steve@BBR, I'm going to look into those products but I'm going with what I got now. You guys got great "Stang Stuff".

you do realize dish soaps are high in alkaline base, and have been known to dry out trim causing cracks over time.

Just use IPA cut 50/50 with water, it's cheaper, and works a lot better.

Seer,

Just using it occasionally to strip. The normally used product is Mother's Car wash. I also treat my trim periodically w/ Son-Of-A-Gun. I use 303 on the fabric top.

why not use IPA, its cheaper, safer, and works better.

People use cocaine occasionally too, that doesn't make it right.

When I'm doing a full detail I'm going through the pain staking process of washing with the foam cannon, than using Iron-X, and finishing with 1Z Einszett W99. Yeah, it's ready.

I have never, ever, ever heard anyone say anything about using Simple Green as a clay lubricant. I guess people do a lot of stupid stuff to their car though.

If/when I want to "strip" wax, I use Lysol Lemon liquid disinfectant in the wash bucket. Not only will it strip wax, but it has actual cleaning power to get of road scuzz. Smells good too. Lol.

I'd just go buy a Pre-Wax cleaner (a good one, which will have SUPER mild abrasives in it, if any) and it'll remove all your old wax and get rid of minor blemishes/light swirls in the paint. Work it by hand with a foam or microfiber pad (autozone) in a back and forth motion until it turns to a haze. Wipe off. Good to go!
