Smoke started coming out from under the hood. The red rubber thing on the positive battery post was melting. I positioned the battery to make sure it was not grounding to the body. Drove for awhile and rechecked the situation. The cables going to the positive battery post were too hot to touch.

Any idea what this is and what to do about it?

Thanks.

First check voltage with the car running, might be getting too much voltage (the regulator in the Alternator might be bad).

Next is there a massive amount of corrosion in or on the positive cable? if to the resistance might be to high in the cable.

Good call. There was corrosion on the cable and the contacts to the alternator. Cleaned it up and problem resolved.

Thanks.

These cables rot internally. I believe there was a recall on the 2010 (???.) If resistance is that high you may have problems again.

Good luck.
