That mustang you got will take a lot of thrashing especially in stock trim. In my experience the biggest problem with the s197 is brakes & weight. Both make it hard to turn if braking late/hard entering the corners. Take all the weight you can easily take out each time you go and have fun. Like some others said learn your shortcomings as well as your car while you learn. And have a blast doing it. Just remember in auto xing especially most mods put you into different classes with higher competition/speed forcing you to try to learn too fast or mod above your capability. Simple items like 10" wheels throw you out of stock classes and a few more mods can put you into classes with fully prepared cars that you can't even hope to run with. And you can spend several k on mods and not be any faster if you don't learn to handle what you have first.

What about a Solstice GXP?

Been there, done that...sort of. My wife had a non-GXP Solstice before we got married. The car was really fun to drive, but had no power (probably about like a Miata, I suppose). I know the GXP has good power over the base model, however, the car was a little cramped for a guy my size. I could never get truly comfortable in it. Plus, I don't think a GXP would fit my budget. If I were to go the small, 2-seater route, I will probably go S2000.

OK, I am running my first autocross this weekend. I got registered for the Twickenham Auto Club and Tennessee Valley Region of the Sports Car Club of America evnet here in Huntsville. I must say that I am pretty pumped up about it. Looking forward to getting back involved in some form of motorsport.

What I'd like to hear from you guys is what should I know before heading to this event? Is there anything that I should do to prepare my car in advance? I read that adding some air to the tires will help prevent the tires from wearing heavily, but it seems to me that would hinder grip. Thoughts?

Also, I have adjustable caster camber plates. Should I dial in the maximum negative camber for better handling? Also, my car is an automatic. I was thinking about running the course in a lower gear, maybe second gear, instead of drive, to keep the engine revs up. This would depend on the course I suppose. Good idea or bad idea?

I am running 1" bolt-on Eibach wheel spacers up front on my car, mainly for looks, to make the tire flush with the fender. Are wheel spacers a bad idea on an autocross car? Should I remove them prior to the event?

Any other thoughts, ideas, or suggestions would be appreciated.

You add the air mainly to keep the tire from rolling over so far that your running on the sidewall. That hinders grip and shortens tire life. Put about 35 - 40 lbs the first time out. A little sidewalk chalk at the edge of the tread will show you how far your tires are rolling over. Dial in some camber up front if you have the adjs. camber brackets. Run I low or second according to your gear ratio and length of straights in the circuit. I have seen some first time auto xers leave their auto car in second the whole time and do pretty good.

I wouldn't be concerned about the spacers make sure they are good and tight and go have fun.

Launch in second gear and keep it there. You could also launch in first and slam it into second once you get near redline.

Thanks for the tips, guys. I am really excited now that it's only two days away. I will post up about the fisrt time experience next week, and hopefully I will be able to get some pics.

Be sure to take some blue masking (painter's) tape. A roll of 2" wide just in case the course has a little gravel here and there and is not swept. Behind the rear tires (especially).

Yeah, I noticed in a lot of the autocrosser's photos that the fenders were taped up to prevent rock chips. I got some ready to go on tonight. Thanks for the heads up!

Bah, it's a race car, not a show car. I've never had a problem with gravel chips on an autoX.

Yeah well some of us show our cars as well.
My last event several cars spun out due to dirt/gravel along the edge of track where it got really close to edge of the pavement. True the course should/could have set up a little further away from this edge but it wasn't.
I haven't had any rock chips either but I tape my up if I see the need after walking the track!

OP how ya do? Fun, yes?

OK, I did the first event this past weekend, and I'm already hooked! It's about all I have been thinking about since Saturday. Lucky for me, there is another event in a town about 45 minutes from where I live this coming weekend, so I don't have to wait too long to get my next fix!

I thought that I would fill you guys in, give a quick synopsis of my day, and post some of my observations.

First of all, I roll into the parking/paddock area, and I instantly felt so out of place. Seems like the car of choice for this area is either a Miata, an S2000, or a Vette. There was only one other "American muscle car" there, a 2012 Mustang V6 vert. Looked very similar to my 07 GT/CS, white auto with a black top. Although I knew that those cars were in a different class, I still kinda felt like I had brought a knife to a gunfight.

So anyway, I guess I looked more like I was going to a car show than an autocross, with my 20" wheels and all. Oh well, I guess that I had "noob" written all over me. No big deal, everyone's a noob at some point, right?

Anyway, I met several great folks there, and rode with three differnt guys in three totally different cars, a first gen Miata, a 2011 Mitsubishi EVO, and a guy with a gutted out, race prepped mid 80's BMW 3 series. It was very interesting to me how much differently riding in their cars felt from me driving mine. It seemed like they were able to drive MUCH deeper into the corners than I did, and their cars didn't seem to be nearly as tail happy as my Mustang. I am sure a lot of that is experience as well, because I think that I could have driven my car a good bit harder than I did, but I did struggle to keep the car from spinning out all day.

Anyway, I digress. I DNF'ed my first run because I missed a gate going into a Chicago box. Time was 55 seconds and change. I was actually happy to come in under a minute! LOL My second run was a clean run, in the 54 second range. I hit one cone on my third run, again 54 seconds and change.

My afternoon went pretty well, with three clean runs, all 54 seconds. Unfortunately, I did not take my 7th and final run of the day because of a tire issue. With my wide tires and lowered suspension, I had developed a serious tire rub at the end of my 6th run, and actually shaved a big slice out of my driver's side front tire, right where the sidewall meets the contact patch. I think the tire is fine, but I am going to switch sides before my next event, so that the area that has the slice shaved out of it is on the inside of the wheel. I was bummed to not get that last run, but I didn't want to risk doing the same thing again and ruining a perfectly good 20" Nitto.

My goal for the day was to have fun and not make a fool out of myself. I definitely had a blast, and I think that I did the latter as well. I had to run the NSTX class, due to my tire/wheel size and my lowered suspension.

At the end of the day, believe it or not, I didn't even check to see how I fared. I know that I was NOT in the top 7 out of 20 novice drivers at the event. I just couldn't bare the thought of finishing dead last, so after the trophy presentation, I just packed up and headed home.

It was a fun, but very humbling experience as well. There was a middle age woman in an Infinity that beat my time handily, as well as an 80 year old man in a Miata that kicked my butt as well. LOL

My expectations of myself were low going into the event, so I am not disappointed that I was slow. I knew that I would be. I turned similar times to the dude in the 2012 V6 vert, and he had done autocross several times before, although he was still in the novice class. I did turn in some times faster than some of the Miatas, but there were several that were faster than me as well. The FTD was a 46.something by a guy in a F500 car. The "local expert hot shoe" turned a 47.something in an S2000. The guy I rode with in the BMW turned a 51 something when I rode with him, and the EVO DNF'ed becasue of missing a gate. He was rolling on that run, though. I think he was doing 49's and 50's most of the day. I can't remember what the dude driving the Miata did when I rode with him, but I know he was giving it heck!

So for next time, I am going to switch my front tires, remove my wheel spacers (if I had not been running my wheel spacers up front, I don't think tire rub would have been an issue at all.), and probably run a little lower air pressure in my rear tires. I was running about 45 psi, and was just couldn't get the rear end to hook up. Also, I ran 45psi on the fronts, and I think that was good, as I didn't seem to roll over on the side wall. I am also going to make it a priority to get the local instructor to ride with me so that I can get some pointers. I probably should have done this last weekend, but I was kind of caught up in the excitement of it all, and before I knew it, the day was over.

^^^ Sounds like a typical first time race to me, with exception of the tire rub issue. It is addicting as all forms of racing are. It sounds like the regulars at your event are a lot like at the events I go to and very willing to help new drivers.
Glad you had fun!

Ditch the dubs and get some smaller wheels that don't weigh 40 pounds each.

Yeah, I am definitely keeping my 20's for street use. I just love the look, but I have already been looking on CL for some used Mustang wheels at a decent price. Probably gonna go with 18's, then get some decent, sticky tires for autocrossing only.

Thanks man! Yes, the regulars were pretty cool to me this past weekend. very willing to help out.

Yeah, like I said, the tire rub wouldn't have happened if I had removed the front wheel spacers, so I am not too concerned about that. I will know for next time.

On a side note, several folks did compliment me on my car, so that was flattering. Maybe it was because it wasn't necessarily a Mustang crowd, but I had a lot of folks asking me about the car. One dude absolutely loved my shaker hood, and there was this one teenager, who BTW, was pretty dang quick, was like "dude, you're in the Cali Special? That car is sick!!" And another guy in a WRX STi thought that I was pushing 500hp! All I could say was "I wish!" LOL

Sounds like your hooked now say good bye to your bank account. Lol

This!!!

Suspension gets expensive once you start wanting that next big purchase! You must resist the urge for at least a year before getting extreme! :p

Whiskey, I notice that you run in STX. They put me in NSTX, I suppose because my car is lowered and my tires and wheels are larger than stock. I wanted to see if you could give me the quick and dirty low down on the STX clas, what's allowed and what's not. If I went back to stock size tires, would I still be in STX, since my car is lowered?

As we all like to do, I want to still be able to mod my car, but I don't want to end up in some class with purpose built race cars trying to compete. My first objective is to have fun, and of course, right now I am just looking to get more acquianted with the sport, but I would like to know a litle bit more of how far I can go with my mods.

At this point I am still not ruling out getting another car for autocrossing. As much as I want to make a go at it in the Mustang, I must admit, I am still scared of damaging it. There was a nice C6 Vette at the autocross this weekend who spun out while running the course, and he ended up scarliy close to a light pole! And while I was talking to another competitor, I asked him if he ever saw anyone seriously damage their car at an event. He told me that at the last event, a Mitsubishi EVO took out a separate light pole when he went off course and hit it head on! On top of that, there is a decent sized ditch a little bit off course, and you'd have to be carrying some speed to run off course and end up in it, but another guy told me that it has happened on a couple of occasions. :omfg:
