My 5.0 exhaust journey

Ok I will chart my exhaust journey on my 5.0 with a 6r80 auto tranny. I will give opinions on each setup. Also feel free to add good and bad combos, it might help save a member some cash on exhaust combos.

STOCK- TOO QUIET! Remeber the +10 cabin is much quieter than 05-09 cabin, its difficult to hear combos with the windows up.

Roush axle backs, rest of exhaust stock. Very little to 0 drone. They are LOUD, deep idle,they are a little too "gurgly". Nice axleback with cats on. I was disappointed in the quality of the muffler thought they might have rust issus later ( Ihave seen several threads on this very issue). never had the stock tips, I added some aftermarket double rolled tips that looked amazing.

Roush axleback + Lethal O/R X+ stock resonators. YUCK. Way too loud and sounded like an old beat up truck with headers and straight pipes and droned in the cabin. It didn't last long like this.

GT 500s+ Lethal O/R X + stock resonators. This was an excellent combo, deeper than stock idle, nice performance tone at WOT, 0 drone. Was a little quiet but have heard cars with resonators removed and is a little louder and meaner. I have heard these mufflers with cats and still has a nice rumble. the only cons to these are 1. still heavy as stock 2. the tips are not as nice aftermarket tips. Great mufflers.

Stainless Works LTs+ SW O/R X+ GT 500 mufflers. I can never leave well enough alone. This combo had some raspiness, that I did not like, did not have a performance tone that I liked.

Stainless Works LTs+SW O/R X, Bassani axle backs. Pros- lighter than stock mufflers,nice tips, deep idle, aggressive tone, very little drone. Cons-expensive, there is slight drone in the cabin, still has a more performance sound than old school muscle sound. I like this setup quiet deep idle, sounds great at WOT, it shrieks lol. It even crackles alittle on deacceleration.

So with cats on the Roush sounds good, heard several GT 500 muffs with stock cats and sounds nice and mellow. Catless the Roush suck. the GT 500s sound GREAT, sound even better with resonators removed. Adding LTs the GT 500s sounded raspy. The Bassani sounded good and deep but still long for a deeper old school style sound with no to little drone.

Awesome write up. I have the same experience with the Roush A/B. They sound great for just a muffler install. As for the O/R X part, I can definitely see where they would sound awful with that kind of the setup.

I think everyone should post their experiences, pictures, videos etc. with different exhaust set ups in this thread. Would be very useful to keep coming back to.

I too have started the journey. I would agree 100% about the roush. The roush is great if you do nothing else. I added the 3" heart throb cat to axle h pipe (shit quality that doesn't fit by the way).

In an atempt to fix what now sounded like crap (very raspy) and was too loud I added some aero 3" resonators. This helped only slightly, made it a bit deeper sounding but still couldn't live with how w/o throttle sounded.

I now have the gt500s and all the rasp is gone, nice sound with my mid section. It would have been too quiet on its own. This is now just about the same weight as stock and doesn't seem to flow as well as the roush set up. Still needs something, not as angry sounding as I would like.

I have the bbk cat delete pipes that I hope to install this week end. They need some work first though. The tube extends past the header mounting flange! It's not gonna seal with out some grinding and that's not the side most have issues with.

I hope I will be able to stop with this next mod, ill post the results. I think I changed the exhaust 8 times on my last car.

I have the bbk cat delete pipes that I hope to install this week end. They need some work first though. The tube extends past the header mounting flange! It's not gonna seal with out some grinding and that's not the side most have issues with.

Wow!! I'm going with the JEGS cat delete pipes to my OEM H-pipe. I hope I don't have to do any grinding!!! NO X-PIPE FOR ME!

Just added Pypes super system to mine. I have UPR X-pipe and stock headers. Deafening at WOT, but sounds great. Not a big fan of the part throttle sound as it's a little to "glass pack" sounding at 2K+ when not WFO. Idle isn't too bad and under 2K isn't too loud. I was looking for flow and weight loss and got both. The car feels better and sounds like all hell is breaking loose when it's WFO. Coming from stock mufflers it was quite the change.

I just got gt500 axle back a on mine with a bassani modular x-pipe with pypes high flow cats. I love the way they sound got plenty of compliments for neighbors. Which 1 owns a new 5.0 with ford racing stingers and another which owns a old soupped up Chevy. I have a video in my thread with pictures.

1. SLP Muffler Deletes = Sounds pretty good.
2. SLP Muffler Deletes + Offroad H = Sounds good but super loud.
3. Magnaflow Street Series + Offroad H = Sounds too quiet, setup #1 was louder.
I will be picking up some Bassanis tonight, hopefully the last set of mufflers I will purchase. I need to sell these other mufflers and get some LTs!!

I have the Kooks catback with Lethal off road H-Pipe. Very nice tone and not that loud. At times I wish it were louder. I also have the automatic. For whatever reason I think the autos tend to be a little quieter. Here's the same combo on someones else car and it's much louder than mine.

I'm moving on to lethal 3" stainless off road X and cammed tune so needless to say I will be pissing 90% of the world off. It's gonna be crazy loud I'm sure.

I had the stock headers with a Lethal ORX and GT500 mufflers with factory resonators on my 2011 and it sounded great. I now have the GT 500 mufflers with resonator delete and stock midpipe on the 2012 and it just sounds OK. The GT500 mufflers just aren't loud enough with cats IMO. I'm gathering parts for the 2012 and when I'm finished and get a tune from Lund I'll have another ORX and all will be good again.

^^^ one of my favorites. Once I get the LTs and OR X installed I will probably ditch the Roush and switch to the magna flow comps.

I've got GT500s on stock 5.0 exhaust. I've have gotten more compliments on it then i did when i had a cammed 3v. sounds crisp. wish it was a touch louder.

Have your resonators cut out. Heard that combination its louder and same great sound.

I have the Xtremes as well and was wondering what they would sound like without the resonators... have any clips of your setup? And you say there is no drone at interstate cruising speeds as well, right?

I know Corsa prides themselves on the whole "no drone" thing, so I'm wondering what the car would sound like with an O/R midpipe and Xtremes...

My first exhaust set up was this:

Had the H-Pipe removed and a generic shorty X-Pipe installed. The cats were still in. I also had the stock mufflers removed and straight pipe put in with a set of quality 4" tips. I REALLY enjoyed this sound and the decel crackling I would get with it. No drone to speak of unless you were in 6th at 1900rpm and gave it half gas or more. Even then, it wasn't much.



My second exhaust set up was when I had the cats removed and a BBR O/R X-Pipe welded in. Still had the stock resonators. That sounded like absolute shit. I drove it for two days, never did get video of it, but it was WAY too loud, WAY too raspy and in general, droned like a mofrackie.

My third and current exhaust set up is this:

BBR O/R X-Pipe, stock exhaust pipe with stock resonators back to a set of Flowmaster Super 44's. I plan on removing the stock resonators here soon.

I really love the way the car sounds right now. After I have the stock resonators removed, I would imagine that I'll soon be getting some aftermarket ones. The car is loud enough now that I don't want it any louder or it may start droning. I have ZERO drone issues as it is now. As the car changes, the exhaust will have to change with it. But these Flowmaster Super 44's are the square shaped black ones. They were $70 each. Welded in by a local exhaust shop.

The other day, I had a dude in an Aston Martin Vantage S ask me to pull into a gas station. I had gone past him in third from 3000-6500 RPM and he absolutely loved the sound of my car. He told me he had an exhaust coming in for his V8 Vantage and he couldn't wait to have it put on. He then says it only cost him $3500 for the exhaust. I kinda of chuckled and said, "Mine has a total of about $500 into it. But of course, your Vantage is in a way different league of cars than my Mustang." The guy grinned and said, "But I'm thinking I'm going to have to buy one of these cars regardless. That American Muscle sound is intoxicating!"

He went on to say he had been checking out the new 2013 GT500. I bet he has one before the end of the week. Dude has some major coin.

Yeah, I believe I posted a couple sound clips in my build thread of a WOT pass, and yes there is no drone at cruising speeds with the resonators out.

Damn frank that does sound good. I hope my gt500 cans with cats deleted and 3" mid section can come close. I suspect it will not be as loud, I should know by the week end.
