MBRP Axle Backs split open under boost on my GT500

Those bullet style are the ones I have lined up for mine from a buddy in AL. He got them from another buddy when he traded his car in, ~2000 miles on them. Now I just need to pick my car up.

If you don't have cats be prepared... They are pretty loud.

Wow. I love the sound of my MBRP's, and had never questioned their quality before. Of course, since I will not forge my car I'm sure even after I get a blower I won't be in danger. Maybe something to consider when I trade up to a 5.0 though.

They popped on acceleration, not a shift.

I've seen entire mufflers fall apart and spread out all over the floor on acceleration. At Seer's power levels, it's not impossible. Of course, I think it has to do much more with construction of the muffler than the pressure of the exhaust gases.

Wouldn't matter either way, they werent constructed very well and did not hold up to their claims.

AF is fine, timing is fine. Car is running pretty good. I just don't think the muffler held up well under that much boost coming through the exhaust.

Your right, it was caused by a rise in pressure and terrible build quality.

The damn muffler did not burst due to a wot box. Even if it did, thats bad design on mbrp's part. I've done plenty of searching and quite a few manufacturers seem to be holding up just fine.

The muffler let loose at about 5500 rpm in 3rd gear.

It doesn't take a genius to see that their material is too thin and their welding is sub par, at least on this set of mufflers that I have in my possession.

But blowing the muffler WITHOUT a backfire/fireball is pretty rare from just pressure alone.
If that was the case both mufflers would be blown equally, no? I don't think exhaust alone even produces 10psi.

BTW running 700 or so hp through chambered mufflers is kind of a bottle neck I would think lol.

I didn't lose any power, whether it was a backfire or not, I did hear a boom, and that was when the muffler let loose. It was a different boom than what my wot box makes. This sounded more like putting an m80 in a can kind've boom.

What I am saying is, the damn thing didn't burst from a wot box shift, and even if it did, it's still a terrible quality exhaust. I've done some searching on wot boxes and chambered mufflers and have seen a few brands holding up just fine. It just looks like MBRP decided to cheapen out and built a product aimed at performance and racing but did not build it to those specifications.

I really think this is an isolated incident. Hopefully it is a combination of a bad muffler and using a chambered muffler in a high powered forced induction application with added stress of a WOT box. I can't tell from the pics, but does the other muffler show any signs of bowing, or other indication that it might also have failed down the road? MBRP has been a top tier performance diesel exhaust manufacturer for many years before moving into the gas truck and performance auto side of things, and this is the first seen or heard of in terms of a failure which we are seeing in this thread.

and typically when companies expand into different markets, you see a quality hit. I too made my purchase based upon their previous reputation.

once this guys buddy visits this thread and sees you have used a wot box, youll be repairing that bumper yourself, I wouldnt have even mentioned it but too late now huh?
