Stop trying to get the last 3-4 gallons in. you're overfilling your tank and soaking the evaporative canister.
Why in the world should I settle for only filling up my tank 75% of the time? No offense man, but that is not a fix I want to settle for. I get 12-15 mpg. Filling up every 140-150 miles is infuriating. I posted to see if anyone has been able to fix the problem. This pisses me off so much, that if I can't fix it with a tweak here or there, I may be willing to replace the entire freaking assembly to make it "like" an 07+.

He ment when you force the last amount in your making it worse by pushing fuel into the evap filter/vent.

My car from e light on to full is 10-11 gallons anyway lol.

Ok. So, can that thing be hollowed out?

Mine comes on fairly early. I have a 45-50 minute trip to work or back (each way). At the level filling has been stopping at, I can fill up right as I leave work, and already be a 3/4 of a tank when I get home. Very frustrating.

You will probably need to do that for a couple months until your evap canister dries out. Your problem is self inflicted and you make it worse every time you fill up. You will need to change your habits if you want it to work correctly again.

This isnt early model problem.
Mine is 2010 and had this issue from day one.
Can this be fixed at dealership under warranty?
If not i might try this.

i figured out the fix for this, it works immediately while pumping fuel. for whatever reason one side is not filling, holding pressure , whatever, when this happens and the pump shuts off, i open the drivers door and stand on the doorsill and rock the shit out of my car for about 10 seconds then i go back to the nozzle and fill my car full. this has worked for me now atleast 10 times. the problem is sporadic but this always has solved it for me so far so its got to be not allowing fuel to fill the other side of the tank completely. try this and see if it doesnt work for you guys.

never worked for me. while trying that and using some deductive reasoning, i came up with that conclusion. but i will say i feel like an idiot using my car like a pogo stick in front of a gas station full of onlookers but whatever works right ?

Sure seems like Ford would of figured this shit out by now! MY wife bought a 2005 with 26,000 miles on it this spring. Seems like Sheel stations(pumps pump very fast) seem to do it the worst. Some places it fills right up..others.......after about 3/4....shit. My 2008 doesn't do it hardly ever...thank god!!

i think the fast pumps are filling one side so fast it actually forms an airpocket on the other side which makes it sort of hydrolock. i went to the beach this weekend ( 230 miles one way ), it did it twice to me and both times it stopped at 5 gallons and wouldnt take anymore, shook the car and filled it completely up!

Last fill was with the nozzle completely upside down. It went to nearly full, so I guess I'll have to live with that.

It just really, really pisses me off. Seriously, how is this ok? I cannot believe Ford fucked up such a fundamental part of owning a car.... putting gas in it.

The tech at my dealership told me a trick....when the tank gets full and the pump clicks off....do NOT keep clicking it to add more gas/top it off, . He told me that it runs down that vent tube into a filter!! when the filter fills up.......the car wil be about impossible to put gas into till the filter is swapped out!! My car is an 2008 model.

Vacuum lines are all tight.
I tried filling up last night and it puked the first quart of gas back out of the filler pipe and down the quarter panel. I was able to ease tiny bits of fuel into the tank every few seconds and eventually got half of a tankful. Something is seriously F'ed up under there.
Any suggestions?

Sorry to revive an old thread, but my wife's 08 GT does this now. It didn't do it when we first got the car and the dealership wants $1400 to replace EVERYTHING fuel/evap related. Seems to me that they want to replace the finger to get the splinter out if you understand my meaning. While I don't mind spending money on the car, the dealership can't tell me for sure that will fix the issue, whitch makes me a bit uneasy.

So after some Internet searching I've found this thread to see if I can do it myself. So from what I understand is I need to clean/replace the vent tube filter and maybe the evap canister. Also need to check the hosiery for loose connections or cracks/breaks/splits. Am I missing anything?

I have an 05 and I just fill the tank with the nozzle upside down. It works perfectly and fills completely every time.

No matter which way I turn the nozzle it still only let's me fill at a trickle and still frequently shuts off or regurgitates gas out of the filler neck. I can say it makes a gurgleing (sic) noise while filling up at the slow pace. Any other 08 and up owners fixed this issue?

Just tried this and worked for me. When I had the filter off I couldnt blow through it either way. Seen its a sponge element so just stuck one end over a garden hose and washed it out. Let it dry, can easily flow air now. Last 2 fill ups have been able to pump full speed!

I thought about cleaning the filter (again), but I decided to just fill with the nozzle upside down. Works every time.

Removing all of the EVAP equipment, and making the appropriate tuning changes is much easier than trying to fix the system. But then again, it's only legal if you use your car off-highway. Wink wink....
