Axle covered in oil

I've been hearing a strange rattle noise in low rpms coming from my rear, so I jacked it up, and I ran into this. My driver side part of the axle is covered in what looks like oil. It looks to be slowly leaking out of the tube.



I'm thinking about turning it in under warranty but I'm not sure if they will service it due to the tune. Any suggestions?

depends on how much of a dick your dealer is...I would say most dealers would cover that as your mods are mostly appearance with some mild bolt ons...

Try it. My dealer told me that they have to prove the modification I did caused the issue and they will only not cover the parts affected by the modification.

Well I scheduled an appointment with the Ford garage tomorrow morning. I describe the problem and they said it could take up to a month to diagnose and fix...

Is the breather valve on your driver's side? Mine was leaking and looked just like that. I just had my clutchpacks replaced (along with the rest of the rear guts) because they were going bad. I had chatter on low speed turns, moaning when turning at any speed after a long drive, rear whine and that ''scraping'' noise many complain about along with drivetrain lash that seemed more than normal.
Their theory was my rear overheated after a lot of the fluid leaked out and caused it to go bad. There is a TSB for these problems and you shouldn't have an issue getting them fixed unless your dealer is a dick or you roll in on slicks
My rear is fixed completely, no noises and the drivetrain lash is almost gone.

^^ I havn't checked the breather.That's exactly what I'm hearing. I hear that weird chatter on low speed turns and when braking. I swore it was the rear brakes until I jacked it up this morning.

That would definitely make sense. How long did it take you to get it fixed? I was hoping to go to the track Saturday, but after all this got put on me, doesn't look likely.

I'd return it to the stock tune just in case, if they discover it's tuned it's just a little more ammunition for them to hassle you or make a note in Ford's computer network that your engine has been tuned. The service guy saying it could take up to a month is a blatant 'soft denial' of warranty, trying to make it too inconvenient for you to have it fixed under warranty. They don't want the warranty work because it doesn't pay enough. If you do have them fix it, be aware they are not happy about fixing it and may not be as careful with your car as somebody who values your business.

I had the same issue, it was the breather valve. The Ford tech looked at it and sait there was nothing they could do about it. It happens from "spirited" driving there is a Boss breather valve and I think Steeda has one too. Will eliminate the oil on the axle.

It took 3 days, it would have need 2 but they didn't get the parts in time to finish it.
I didn't get noise when braking. If I was stopped and I started while turning, it would make a metallic chatter and you could feel it.
I went in and asked for a tech to come for a ride. I reproduced the noise and told him I though the clutch packs were bad and he agreed with me. Make sure you take a tech out when you get there so they don't give you the '' we couldn't reproduce the problem'' bullshit.

My early 2011 is too. Interestingly these don't seem to leak like the ones on the other side do.

The only reason I noticed mine was leaking was the morning after a hard, fun drive, when I pulled out for work I saw a puddle where my car was. Everyone need to keep an eye out for this, especially after driving the car hard. It's a known problem......

I though that thing didn't work, since it almost always got melted by the exhaust.

Well dropped her off this morning, and they called me about noon and said they are replacing the breather and it should be done by tomorrow. Hopefully they know to change my gear oil since half of it was covering my axle.

I would double check to make sure, you can always add it yourself.
