Hey everyone,
I installed a used single hellion kit last weekend. After a day of driving to work and back on the base tune, I noticed I was seeing some smoke behind my car. On the same day I had to pass a car to avoid another car, I got in to boost about 2psi and it left a HUGE smoke cloud as soon as I went in to boost.
I got the car home and pulled the air filter to see if there was any shaft play our anything not normal. When checking the turbo, I noticed the turbo had a little left to right shaft play and the inside of the compressor housing was coated in oil.
At this point I considered the turbo done and decided I would just sell the kit and move on to something else. I let the car sit for the rest of the week to uninstall it today.
I removed the kit today and all was going great until I removed the coupler going from the turbo to the intercooler. Literally, about half a quart of oil came pouring out from the coupler. It must have been collecting in the bottom of the IC. At this point it was clear that the front side compressor seal must have went in the turbo and that was the reason I was getting some smoke from the mufflers. It's also important to note that the turbine side of the turbo was dry as a bone.
I continued to return my car back to stock and finished a couple hours later. On my drive back home, I noticed that I was still seeing smoke coming from the back of the car. I figured it was some residual left from the kit. I continued driving and decided to get in to it a couple times to see if I could maybe burn or blow the remaining residual off. I got in to it 3-4 times going up to 4500 rpms and it billowed smoke like a freaking choo choo train. Mostly a blueish/grey color. I was about a mile from being home so I decided to just take it easy and drive normal. When driving normal, it still smoked and the smoking increased with RPM. It's smoking easily twice as bad now with the turbo kit not installed!?!?!?
Got home and parked. Walked behind the car and noticed that the smoke was only coming out of the drivers side exhaust pipe.
I'm at a loss of words right now. When I removed the kit I basically removed every pipe on the car that could have had oil in it. The only pipes left that could have any oil in them would be the over axle pipes and the mufflers.
The only thing I can think that it may be is there is still residual in the over axle pipes and or mufflers.
That's all that's adding up to me. My oil level is good and it doesn't smell like fuel. No CELS's also.
The only things I can think of doing is to take my car on a much longer drive tonight to see if I can burn off the residual oil or remove the mufflers and run the car to see if it still smokes. Does anyone know if the gt500 mufflers have the fiberglass packing in them?
Any insight or steps I can take to trouble shoot this?
Please keep negative comments about the hellion kit to yourself. Yes I know it doesn't have the reputation.
Thanks in advance.
