Hey everyone. Really good track section in here, I’ve learned a lot about this chassis just lurking for a few weeks. Everyone’s build threads are great, and as always, the development done and information shared by Vorshlag is not only much appreciated, but humbling and motivating.

3 weeks ago I made the jump into the Mustang world with a 2014 GT Coupe with 301A, track, and recaro packages. In an effort to chronologize and organize my thoughts and experience with the chassis, as well as crowd source (if the crowd would be so gracious) I think posting it in here as opposed to other forums (and other sections of this forum) will probably keep everything most on topic.

Here are a few pics of the car the day after I bought it.

My initial impressions with this car were good, but not great. I drove a standard rear end 2013 with base brakes, base seats, and (sucks in) all season(s) rubber, and I did like the car but wasn’t convinced. For the next few months I considered everything from a Focus ST to a 996TT to various generation M3s and M5s. Coming from a BMW Z4 M Coupe I was building into a BSP car (thread here) the base GT I drove had plenty of get up and go but felt boaty on the all season rubber and I really didn’t care for the brakes. With the standard rear end it felt very quick, but not “fast” like I was expecting it, like an E60 M5 for example.

After convincing myself that what I was after was an 04+ E46 M3 with budget for bushings, shocks, and tires, I was getting really fed up with the E46 M3 market. Any clean example commanded high 20s at the least, and despite being a DIYer and proclaimed advocate of letting someone else take the depreciation hit of a new car, I just couldn’t bring myself to pay 28k+ for a 10yr old car with 60k+ on the clock that needed 1-2k in consumables just to bring it up to spec.

That’s when I found a car built (nearly) exactly how I wanted on a dealer lot. Check that, I found three of them, as they had ordered 3 built exactly the same way, in 3 different colors. I had to check it out, and my salesman said “pick your color” so I chose the black one (versus silver and red) and with the upgraded rubber, brakes, seats, and rear end, that’s all she wrote. I drove the car home that day.

Sorry for the novel already, typing things out helps me with my thoughts and I like to get them down, even if it’s only for me to reread them later. These cars are amazingly well documented on forums and at least initially I doubt I will be bringing anything revolutionary or new to the table, but if it helps anyone else out, or at least passes someone’s time at work, I guess that’ll have to do.

Plans for this car are simple (in theory). I like to autocross and would like to get this out on the track. However, as I learned with my Z4MC, I don’t particularly like the AX rulesets provided by SCCA and will instead, with some consideration to Solo rules (but not governed by them), do what I will with the car and drive it where it places. I’m not exceptionally quick, or after national trophies or anything, so why build a car to a ruleset that governs something I don’t really care about winning in the first place? (Well...my local club gives out tshirts as trophies...and everyone always needs more tshirts...)

Suspension will be a major focus on this car. I had AST 4200s on my Z4 and my experience was limited but very good. I’d like to try the 4150s for this car but the budget will take a little while to get there. We’ll see if in the meantime I can deal with the 4x4 stance or buckle and buy springs & adj panhard rod. I plan on thrashing the stock rubber and moving to an 18” setup with some real rubber.

Anyway, thanks for the great subforum, and be gentle on me :/

So... in a mindset only car guys (and gals) can understand, after putting an immense 450mi on the car, I came to the conclusion that it’s too quiet. Way too quiet. However, having learned my lesson on loud exhausts (straight pipes on an S54) I didn’t want to overdo it. Forums had the easy answer - GT500 axleback.

All I can say is that this is the exhaust this car should've come with from the factory (or perhaps should be an option...). The car now sounds like it actually has V8 power, deep, grumbley, burbly on injector cut-off, yet completely civil when you want it to be. I could go louder (which is what many people who buy this axleback say) but considering there is no drone, are official FRPP parts, and a ridiculously cheap price, I can't see a downside here.

As you can see my camera skills are as ham fisted as my driving at times, but here are a few

A lot of people wish these had "better" tips but I like these. I don't really like rolled tips in general, just seems unnecessary to me. Slash cut pipe, no bullshit, looks good and business-like to me.

I also threw on a JLT catch can since the internetz told me to

The (rest of) the current short list includes tinting the windows and getting a breather/catch can for the diff oil.

Looks good so far, keep the pics coming I am very interested in seeing what you do with the suspension.
Vorshlag has a bilstein set up that includes plates, springs and shocks that looks interesting to me but so far I have not seen or read of anyone using that specific set up.
I too looked at the AST 4150, but they are above my budget.

Thanks and will do - everyone likes pictures. I've seen that kit on Vorshlag's site and it seems like a really good value. I have no experience with Bilstein shocks however, and I guess we'll see how it goes (budget wise) but I don't know that spending that money on what will likely end up being an "interim" solution is really what I want to do.

Having experience with the Vorshlag plates on my BMW, however, and direct contact with them (Jason mainly) I'll say that their plates are definitely worth the premium, and they are really good guys to work with. As I'm in a mechanical service related industry, it's really nice to get the support that they have. Hell, to be able to pick up a phone, and talk to someone and ask them questions without having to go through 500 menus, and get actual advice as opposed to "this will fit your car" is awesome.

Lmfao, welcome to the mustang side of things. I too came from a z4mc with electric cutouts after the header. I too have a black base model with the track pack at the time. I would have had recaros if it were an option but they didn't offer them on the 12s. I built mustang for straight line and bought a miata for the curvy stuff

so we speak the same language! I actually came quite close (a few times) to buying a NA miata or e30/e36...but in the end logic dictated I don't have enough space for more than 2 vehicles (I don't), so my truck and mustang it is.

One of these days I'll put a LSx in an E36...I promise

Looks great man, eager to see what you do with this. I hear you on the tips issue. How much practicality are you aiming to keep? Your Z4MC was pretty hardcore.

Thanks man - way down the road I might think about turning into a track only car, but for the immediate and foreseeable future I'll definitely be keeping it streetable. Everyone's got their definition of practicality... I can handle a stiff ride (no homo) and have drive 8+ hrs straight in a fixed back racing shell so my definition of streetable might be a little different than others. I do have access to trucks and trailers but that's kinda a logistical challenge living in a condo right now. Maybe come up with a tire trailer so I don't wear the good stuff out driving to and from events.

Car looks great! Exact options I wish I had, except that neither the Track Pack or Recaros were available in '11 and the Brembos were a terrible deal at $1500. Early adopter tax I suppose ... definitely excited to see what you do with it. Congrats!

You bought the exact car model that I tell everyone who asks me to get - the Track Pack with Recaros. The 3.73 gear ratio isn't ideal, but it is easy enough to change, and you get so much more with the Track Pack in 2014.

I also agree that these cars are WAY too quiet stock, and the OEM mufflers do their job too well. I'd prefer a full length header and X-pipe over just swapping mufflers, but that will make it have more bark as well (while the right headers will add about 30 whp).

The oil catch can is also a good investment. Keep an eye on the plastic lines and fittings that come in the JLT kits, as they are prone to breakage. I heard they switched from plastic (ack!) fittings to aluminum, which is a big plus. If only it had a proper mount, too...

Anyway, good thread. What are your goals with the car? Autocross? Track, Just a fun street car?

And wise move over the higher mileage E46 M3. Those are great cars but... they are expensive to maintain. We work on these all the time and it can get really out of hand for the M-specific parts. A water pump that is $45 for a non-M E46 is $450 for the M3's S54 motor, etc....

Thanks for the comments everyone.

The mufflers are really there to solve the too quiet "problem" and nothing else. I'm definitely not done fiddling with the exhaust yet...but in your own words Terry the car doesn't need more power first. I'll do something with it down the line, but for a quick and easy install and a $300 price of entry... I'm loving the way the GT500s sound.

I just went to look at the fittings on my JLT catch can. The elbow fitting is definitely plastic, while the straight fitting appears to be aluminum (at least the nut is). Might be worth looking into what mcmaster/swagelok has to offer in terms of more robust fittings.

Goals for the car aren't really clear cut yet, beyond having fun with it. It'll definitely see a lot of autocross and track time, that's actually gonna be the main purpose, but keeping it streetable is paramount as the autox I prefer to go to are down in Rantoul and that's a slight hike from the Chicago area. As I said before, I'll likely be more worried about doing what makes sense for the car as opposed to keeping it in / building it for a specific class since I know I'm not (and I'm not really trying to be) competitive.

Why not? Talent - time - money - all of the above. I basically want to build a car that's competent in a cornering environment while keeping it relatively streetable. Hence the post in this subforum. I'm also pretty rigid in my "function over form" preferences, so you won't see any wacky huge heavy wheels or anything. But I believe a solid performer and decent looker can both be had within reason for a street car... we'll see

Yea, the lack of a mounting bracket with their catch can lets it flop around and then the plastic lines and fittings eventually fatigue. Took several months but ours eventually broke... at a track event, where I lost vacuum assist on the brakes. Not a fun thing to find out when you go to hit the binders.

It isn't likely going to fail quickly, but it would be wise to make a bracket (the can has two tapped holes on top) and upgrade the fittings and lines to stronger bits, somewhere down the road.

I like where you head is at, too... don't upgrade power first, like so many want to do. Address the obvious suspension and grip limitations. Good stuff. Let me know if we can help.

great choice in cars!

i too came from the BMW world to Ford. i would have never considered them to be a viable car for my needs but the stang has proven quite capable.

did you get brembos with the track pack?

what will you be using the car for?

Brembos are included in the track pack.

Regarding the JLT - I believe they will send you aluminum fittings if you call/email them. I'm only running the JLT model because I got it for $50 from a friend who was de-modding to sell for a CTS-V. If (when) it breaks I will buy something better.

Welcomwe to the Mustang world! Great looking Steed you have there. Seeing yours makes me wish that I had held out for Recaros. :-( I auto crossed my 2013 for the first time last weekend. I was very impressed, as it did pretty well, especially considering that I am definitely NOT the Stig.

Looking forward to seeing what you do with this one. And BTW, I LOVE your old Z4MC. This means a lot becuse I generally hate BMWs. Well, I don't hate the cars, just the douchebags that drive them. But that Z4MC is pretty much the only BMW that I'd be caught dead in. Why did you get rid of it?

I sold that car and bought a condo. It was an awesome car (but as we all know when delving deeper into cars) but not without it's faults/compromises. It certainly seems to be a "love it or hate" it design though.
