Had some Pypes M80s thrown on about a month ago. A week ago I got my off road pipes for my x-pipe installed and got a video for you all along with a question. I knew before I got the off road pipes that it would get raspy and loud, just didn't expect this much rasp after hearing other o/r set ups in person.

So, if I throw on a high flow cat (which I will need for emission time swaps anyway) can I reduce/remove the rasp while keeping most of the volume? Or would an H mid pipe be a better selection? I just worry that the rasp will be replaced by some other obnoxious sound instead of really solving the issue.

As a side note, I love the sound, it's exactly what I wanted, but the rasp is killing my vibe on decent acceleration.

And now, a video for you all to enjoy (hopefully, if I can embed properly. Lol):

X is definitely more raspy than an H. an H is going to make it a deeper sound for sure. If you like the tone you're getting, maybe try a Prochamber? It's kinda like a mix between an H and X and I've never heard an OR Prochamber with rasp, even with my LM1s on my Cobra.

I heard from a few with Mac pro chambers that it lowered the volume quite a bit?

I like the after sound!! How much does it pop under deceleration?

I have an auto so I haven't really tried to hear it pop yet. I got close last night and it sounded like it would pop a good bit. I love the sound, it's amazing.

It does a bit. It made my LM1s bearable on the Cobra :naughty1:

I will check out the video later tonight after work. But that may be an option for me. I wouldn't mind it being a little quieter.

Some resonators would cut the rasp down. Maybe try an axle back with resonated tips like the pype bombs or the Mac boom tubes.

Yeah I have some Pype Bombs already actually. The issue is my custom tips are welded on and I no longer have my hangers, the shop didn't give them back to me. I'm not so sure I want to go with another axleback anyway. What is on it right now is a resonator glasspack (the Pypes M80 muffler).

I knew the M80's were resonators, but I was thinking a resonated axleback might cut down on some of the rasp and still be as loud as you want. For what it's worth, I think it sounds pretty damn good right now though.

I think you will have to hear them in person to hear the rasp. If you watch the launch portion you can tell it changes pitch on one of the shifts. Just think of that in an even higher metallic pitch and that is what the rasp sounds like.

The Pype Bombs are a good idea though, I may make an attempt at getting hangers and reinstalling them again.

Try being alittle lighter on the throttle on easy acceleration and it's more bare able BUT then again being an auto it'll probably shift before the raspyness

I have the same set up, it drove me nutz at first (it was even worst with mac's) so I changed my driving style some.

Yeah it's hard to get true sound on a video. I am sure any good muffler shop could get you fixed up with the hangers to run the Pype Bombs.

Probably. My dad was thinking about running them also. He was going to have a shop modify them to fit his 5.0. I will have to keep gathering info and ideas and make a final decision.

I like the sound personally , but I think the rasp is attributes of the 3v motors.

I heard a 5.0 with an off road x and ghost cam tune that was raspy as crap! way louder than mine actually. Lol.

That's the reason why you never use a X pipe on it:) H all the way :thumb:

Yeah I'm regretting not keeping my stock H pipe now just because of this.. :(

Just sound, It sounds great, but the rasp is terrible. I have always liked the mid mount muffler system.

Yeah that's the way I feel. The mid muffler reminds me of the New Edge sound, I love it!

Does anyone know how much a high flow cat will reduce the volume? Would it make it as quiet as stock cats again???

The cats will reduce volume alot. I ran my stock H pipe and Roush axleback a while ,before I swapped for a Pypes catless H. Now it is Loud:)

Obviously stock cats will reduce it back to what it was, but are "high flow" cats any different? The name implies they are different but in what way really?

^^True. Not sure really, I have either been stock mid-pipe or catless. Good luck.
