Driving style can also favor a tire.

I can agree with this too.

The only reason I have been on all season up until this point (other than lack of track set of wheels), is I can keep up with most people running the "high-end" summers. Maybe not someone on Rivals, R888, A6's, etc, but the guys on the RE-11, Hankook's, etc. haven't been too far ahead of me (in some cases actually BEHIND me) when I run Potenza Pole Positions RE960AS. I went with those because we put an earlier version on my dad's IROC-Z. We loved them so much on that (probably only tire that handles that car in the wet without a short tread life), and I was never disappointed with them on the Mustang.

The local guys would kinda laugh when they saw what tires I was running, and how well I was doing compared to others. They came to the assumption that I must be able to drive the shit out of hard compounds (not very hard obviously as noticed with my current set of DDs).

The Hankook Noble2's that I have now are terrible on the track, not bad for DD though. Now that I have the wheels, I just need tires, and I was hoping on the Rival's. I guess I'll plan for the RE-11's, and see how they will do. On any car I have driven on the track, I've felt the most comfortable with the Bridgestone's (RE-11, Pole Position Potenza A/S, Potenza GRID A/S, etc.) anyways, so I am hoping the RE-11's won't be THAT bad vs. the Rivals.

Problem with star specs is there aren't any sizes meant for a 18x10. The regular Direzza II has a few sizes, not 295/35-18 (or 275/40-18), but a few 18" sizes.

The Dunlop Direza ZII, which was the winner in that article and it was in 275-35-18 flavor. That is a perfect match for 10" rim. Better fit than the 285-30-18 they offer for sure. I have been pleasantly pleased with the RE-11, but I would consider that ZII. I mean if it is beating the Rival....it's doing something right.

And if anyone actually stocks it, that's a plus, too!

TR has the 275/35 ZII's for $986 after rebate:

Also has the Rivals in the 275/35 size at $1112, it's just that everyone want's to run as much rubber as possible:

I'd highly consider taking the RS3s for $860 what a deal:

Here are the RS3s in a 285/35 at $1076 for the set:

Just called and talked to our rep at TireRack (Nate) and he said the 295/35/18 Rival is about to be back in stock. He said "early next week" is a safe bet.

No worries.

Yep, I just got the same reply from the Tire Rack. Tires available next week. Maybe my e-mails actually made a difference....

This is awesome news. Now it's about who has the fastest fingers to process their order first :)

Kidding ^^ but now that I have your attention I was wondering if anyone tried mounting the 315/30/18 Rival square. I know it isn't as big as the 295/35/18 Rival, but do you guys get the 315/30/18 to fit in the front without fender modification?

I looked at TR before checking this thread, lol. I may wait a bit before tires, but I am at least getting the suspension lowered in the next week or two. I figure at least one of these changes should help for another event or two.

I don't think you could hope to fit a 315 Rival up front under stock S197 fenders. The 315/30/18 Rival is freagin huge... look at the specs.

  • 12.0" of tread width
  • 12.6" of section width
  • Recomended wheel range: 10.5-11.5"

We ran these 315s on an 18x12" up front, and that was of course with flares. Ran the 335/30/18 out back on the same sized 18x12s, also with flares. We're moving to the 335/30/18 Rival at all 4 corners for the Optima shootout... just ordered 4 of the last 5 in stock, yesterday. Whew!

Realistically, for a stock fendered S197 you are better off with the BIG 295/35/18 Rival on an 18x11 at both ends. Both the Mustang above and below are running that set-up. The 295/35/18 is 11" wide...

That is awesome! I figured I'd wait and get more people to jump, but hey at the end of the day I was coming to the forum for some help.

Cheers,

Whoa, that makes my decision easy. Tire manufacturers play with sizes quite a bit. I run 305/660 and 305/680 Pirellis on my car and they fit with plenty of room remaining so I figured the 315s would be tight, but would still fit. After looking at the pictures above 295/35/18 Rivals seem to be as big as I'd get under the fronts.

No point staggering the F/R either I'd assume since the size of the rear is shorter than the front if I had the 315/30 or even the 335/30.

Thanks!

Not only no but hell no on fitting up front with a 315. I need a tiny little spacer as it is to get the 295's to go.

Has the whole "offset strut" offered by Cortex/Griggs been discussed already? Why doesn't Vorshlag consider that route? I mean if CSamsh has to have spacers to fit 295s and you have to spend money on ARP studs just to use the spacer.... I know Vorshlag would have already considered this (assuming). What was the verdict? Apologies if this has already been discussed and i missed it.

The hubs are a wear item...they get replaced anyway, so I don't really consider that too much of a problem. We're quibbling over millimeters when dealing with front fitments like this- the Rivals have a huge rim protector, hence the reason for the spacers. I don't need them when I run 315 A6's or V710's.

In other news....THEY'RE BACK!!! 285/35/19 is a new size...and looks like all the big 18's are "In Stock" as opposed to "Special Order"
