James - check out the S&W Shield. It's my EDC. You can get them with or without a safety, in 9mm or 40.

my brother has one and I'm not a huge fan, I have a Walther PPS and lobe it, only safety is the little trigger one though.

A buddy has the PPQ (I think it is) that he carries, it's a good shooter for sure. I looked at the Shield, G26, the Nano, and the XDs. I really wanted the Glock, but the Shield was just a little bit thinner which I liked. It shoots decent - not as good as my G19 - but that is to be expected from a smaller gun. I like that it has a true safety. Any of the subcompacts are going to be too much in .40 IMO, 9mm is about right.

I agree for doing a lot of shooting, but go shoot a S&W model 60 in 357 and it will change your mind lol. I love my 1911 for range shooting, it is so smooth.
