I was washing my 13 GT yesterday and noticed the hood bubbling on the front edge. My 07 had the same issue. Why is this still an issue?

My '11 did that also just like my '07. Get it fixed as soon as possible as Ford has some funny corrosion rules. Mine was replaced last year on the grace of the dealer as even though my millage was around 11,000 miles.

I also found some corrosion on my trunk lid and that is on me as they said they can't help this time. The body shop I use has a way of cleaning and sealing the corrosion. So I'm going to try that and if that doesn't last I will get a new deck lid and have them paint it.

Will ford fix the bubbling? I thought it had to have rusted through for them to fix the issue?

yes aluminum rusts.
I did a quick google search for ford corrosion warranty.
it's 5 years unlimited miles. the only problem is it must be rusted thru for replacement warranty.
there is a 3yr/36K mile bumper to bumper warranty. bubbling should be covered under this.
take it to your dealer and talk with someone about it. most dealers should cover it.

I have worked in a body shop for over 30 years. GM- Mazda- VW dealer.
I have repaired a LOT of bubbling seams over the years.
I strip the area with a fiber disc. then sandblast the area. then feather the paint with 180 grit. now etch prime with 2K etch primer. after proper flash time I epoxy prime and let sit over night. now lightly scuff, apply seam sealer to seam. after seam seal is dry seal with epoxy primer and refinish. if possible rust proof with inter panel rust proofing.
if you removed all of the oxidization it shouldn't return.

the reason it bubbles is when the panel is formed the metal is bare. oxidization starts to form immediately on bare metal.
when they stamp the panels the bent over the lapped edges are bare even after it goes thru the dip priming stage and top coats.
now you take delivery. moisture will work it's way into the bare metal edges and start bubbling.
it's been this way since they started stamping metal panels. they have slightly changed the painting process to fix the problem but it will never be corrected until the completely seal all of the stamped edges.

Mine did, which is how I ended up with the cervini. I know a guy with a 11/12 Roush who just got Ford to pay for a paint job.

no, it doesn't, rust is a Iron based corrosion.

Rust is an iron oxide, usually red oxide formed by the redox reaction of iron and oxygen in the presence of water or air moisture. Several forms of rust are distinguishable both visually and by spectroscopy, and form under different circumstances.[1] Rust consists of hydrated iron(III) oxides Fe2O3·nH2O and iron(III) oxide-hydroxide (FeO(OH), Fe(OH)3).

Given sufficient time, oxygen, and water, any iron mass will eventually convert entirely to rust and disintegrate. Surface rust is flaky and friable, and it provides no protection to the underlying iron, unlike the formation of patina on copper surfaces. Rusting is the common term for corrosion of iron and its alloys, such as steel. Many other metals undergo equivalent corrosion, but the resulting oxides are not commonly called rust.

Aluminum rusts?

haha, sorry.... corrodes... I have some bubbles coming up on the front lip of my hood which is why I inquired. Mine is an early production 2012 and is just about out of warranty (August 11th).

I understood the bubbling was due to iron contamination. There is a TSB on it.

that's what the engineers will tell you. they might be right on some of them.
in my experience it's caused by moisture attacking the bare metal in the seam. I have repaired hundreds of cars with this problem. didn't matter who built it, Audi, Jaguar, MB, Mazda, GM, Ford. they ALL have this problem.
I think I first saw this problem in the mid to late 80's on olds delta 88's and 98 regency with aluminum hoods. I think they only had aluminum hoods for 2 years before they stopped building aluminum hoods.

worse yet get a rock chip in the paint. oxidation will be happen soon.
in my opinion. in about 3 or 4 years from now. I wouldn't want to work at a ford dealer and a bunch of oxidizing trucks start showing up, EXPECALLY in the salt states.
I have seen a few mountaineers with oxidizing aluminum gates now. I think I have repaired 4 or 5 in the last year, and I don't work at a ford dealer shop.

Yes it is still an issue. Currently have 1 '13 Mustang and two '15 Explorers in our body shop due to this issue.

My 09 does not have this issue, but my GF's 09 did.

Is this what people are referring to? Bc when I google images of mustang hood bubbling I see much more corrosion. The pictures below is what's on my hood and just looks like a shitty clear job from the factory. But wasn't sure if that is what the corrosion stems from and mine just lasted like this bc I don't DD it and it's garage kept. OP do you have any before and after pics?
