Clunk

So last night I heard what sounded like I ran over a plastic bottle. It was a low pop kinda noise. I was in a parking lot so I didn't think much about it. Then before I pulled onto the street I thought I heard a cluck up front somewhere. Didn't think much of it till this morning. Now when ever I take a left turn at slow speed she clunks up front on the right side. I haven't heard it on the street yet, only in parking lots. Not sure if it's because the wheel is turned farther or if it's speed related. The clunk is the kinda noise you get when you have something rolling around in your trunk kinda clunk. I cant get it to make any noise while stationary and turning the wheel lock to lock. I'm pretty good with suspension stuff but this one made me scratch my head. Haven't gotten underneath the car to look but was wondering what you guys thought. I know it's not much to go on but it has only done it 5-6 times and I haven't been able to nail it down to it occurring under more specific parameters.

Sounds like front sway bar bushing, had very similar to what you describe on my Roush, would make a clunk sound, worth looking at...

My only other thought would be the bearing on top of the strut or the bushing on the lower control arm...

Well now it sounds like it’s coming from behind me. Went over a driveway at the store and it was real loud. Scary loud. Gonna stick my head under there when I get back to work.

Lookee what I found. Wow. Not sure how this cracked like that but I'll limp the car home tonight and drive the '76 Pontiac until I can get a new part from BMR. Or might just unhook the rear bar until I get a new mount.

I already said that.

Gonna have to take a closer look at the crack when I get it off. Not sure why it would crack there. I don’t remember hitting anything or running over anything that would have stressed it like that. I did get hit from the rear last summer and it did pop the tire but didn’t damage the rim. There was a lot of body damage but all supports and crumple zones were intact. Can’t see that impacting the sway bar mount like that. Can’t see much of anything causing it to crack like that. I’ll follow up once I talk with BMR too.

Well of course BMR got back to me the next business morning. Kelly apologized for the inconvenience and reiterated that this bar is meant for drag racing and even though they say you can drive it on the street that they recommend unhooking it when not racing. This was something I was told when I purchased it. Basically designed racing parts will become fatigued and stressed during normal and prolonged abuse on the street. Anyways they are going to send me a custom one with a thicker wall thickness. How cool is that? Throwing in new bushings as well. Gotta love BMR and their customer service. My current build (2nd gen F-body) is getting all BMR parts put on it because of their superior customer care and service. Can't say enough about Kelly and his crew.

So I pulled the bar and busted mount off the car so I could drive it. My other car has 42 year old AC and it doesn't blow very cold. Anyways I took a couple of phone pics of the cracked piece. Maybe someone who knows about metal may conjecture on the failure.

Pretty impressive. Only two weeks after talking to BMR they custom built me a replacement mount with a thicker wall tube and got it to my office in Nevada.

That chromo? Very strange failure maybe someone zipped out a weld leaving a stress riser and then redid it but there's not much evidence of that. Possible it was bending there and failed from fatigue.

Easy to make out of thicker tube I bet they had an old swing set or hospital bed around.
