Ford is moving towards a more global market.

You'd think so but actually in the case of the GT500, it isn't. It won't be sold in Europe (probably because it doesn't meet tough European emissions standards) so it'll only be sold in North America and in Arab states around the Persian Gulf where gas is cheap and owners don't get clobbered with high import duties and annual road tax.
MrAwesome987, this is probably what Ford thinks the market wants rather than what it actually wants. As for it potentially being a good track car, weighing in at ~4400lb with driver and being nose heavy, it would be like trying to make an elephant sprint around a winding outdoor track. Sure you can do it, but getting all that lard to switch directions won't be pretty! As JJ427R correctly mentioned, managing engine and tranny heat is going to be a major challenge.
I think if you really want a track car, get the GT350 (especially the R version) and reserve the GT500 as a street bruiser.

They'd have to call it the Shelby GT500 Superleggera. ;)
Stripping out 400lb won't be easy without removing some creature comforts, and you can bet your bottom dollar that the sticker price would be higher.

Two handling packages with increasing levels capability are offered for the all-new Shelby GT500. An available Handling Package includes adjustable strut top mounts and spoiler with Gurney flap. For the truly hardcore, an available Carbon Fiber Track Package features exposed 20-inch carbon fiber wheels with 0.5-inch-wider rear wheels (11.5-inch), custom Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, adjustable exposed carbon fiber GT4 track wing and splitter wickers with integrated dive plane. The rear seat is deleted to reduce weight.

No creature comforts are lost. Most who want to go fast would pull the back seat anyway.

True but is all of the above going to produce a 400lb weight saving?

I read it when the car was first introduced with the weight mentioned. The article said the GT500 would come in under a camaro zl1 with the cftp, standard gt500 weighs more than 300 lbs more than the zl1. Where i read it i dont remember.

Thats what the Ford engineers said.

I find it hard to believe you can dump 400 lbs with those carbon options. There would have to be
a helluva lot more, perhaps CF rotors or something else. The 2020 gets massive 16" rotors... which would normally weigh a ton, if metal.

I realize not apples to apples, however, didn't the F150 save like 700 lbs going to aluminum panels?

Steel is 2.76 X heavier than AL. 6061-T6 AL is 40 ksi yield strength.. and 6063-T832 AL is 39 ksi yield.
Plane jane steel is typ 28-35 ksi yield. Problem with AL is.... it flex's (and also twists) 3 X more than steel....so ribs and some bracing is usually included. Powder coated AL has a durable finish.
6061-T6 (and also the T8 version) is easily drilled / punched / welded /machined etc. Hoods on mustangs are AL..... they would weigh a ton if steel was used.
