I guess the part that confuses me is I’m not sure what good a wheel spacer will do for me. Even if I pull the wheel away, it’s dragging on the inside of the wheel. I believe I need a larger diameter. There’s plenty of depth to clear the front side of the caliper. It’s hitting on the ID of my wheel.
At least it clears the front…I thought 19’s would clear the 6 pots on the outside of the caliper. Here’s mine with 20’s although I had to use a 3mm spacer (2mm of clearance). D63A40F7-5D36-4228-A769-DE8804F63EB0.jpeg

What calipers are those? The wheel style may play into it as well. Just because the wheel is 19” diameter doesn’t mean all wheels have the same ID does it?

Correct; wheel dimensions vary based on design/size/width/offset; etc... You're also correct that wheel spacers are not the answer in your case; you need larger wheels (20's) to clear those calipers. You might want to look up the stock wheels those calipers were paired with and use that as a yard stick but I'd recommend visiting a competent wheel/tire shop and get measurements for fitment options to be sure. Best if you can find a set of wheels with the proper clearances and offsets so everything clears without the use of adapters or band-aids of any kind.... Good luck.

Will these clear 19x9.5 shelby cs5 wheels? I assume they will. Quite a bit heavier than stock? I want to do these or shelby 4 piston

The stock calipers in most cases will clear just about any size wheel (18 - 20) made for the 05 - 14 Mustang. The issue becomes when you try to use either the Brembo 4 pot (GT500) or later Mustang calipers/disks. You need to know what the offset and backspacing numbers are to be certain they'll clear without interference (and caliper to inner wheel barrel clearance for later models). In most cases a 19" wheel can be used with the 4 pot Brembo. A 19 x 9.5 may be able to be used without spacers but that depends on the offset. This is where you want to ask other members what their experiences are or discuss with a reputable wheel/tire shop what will work for your application. The company selling the wheels should also be able to advise what will clear but again dependent on what calipers you plan to use. You can take some measurements and they should be able to tell you whether the wheels you'd like to use will work or not.

In my case I bought a used set of 2014 19 x 9" stock wheels that clear the Brembo 4 pot calipers. Model number: BR3Z1007E

Sorry, i meant will the 6 piston s550 calipers clear the shelby cs5 19x9.5 wheels, I know they clear the stock brakes since i all ready have the wheels, I'm kinda stuck with them. they have a +34mm offset and 6.543" backspacing. On Shelbys website this is what they say. "DUE TO THE MANY BRAKE PACKAGES AND CONFIGURATIONS, THESE WHEELS MAY NOT CLEAR THE CALIPERS IF YOU HAVE AN EXTREME AFTERMARKET/PERFORMANCE BRAKE SYSTEM AND/OR MAY REQUIRE WHEEL SPACER." They also don't answer emails. What company doesn't answer emails? I'll probably just do the 4 piston to be safe and they are half as much for the reman ones.

Well, for comparison's sake the link shows that the stock OEM 9 x 19" wheel also has a 42mm offset (and does clear the 4 pot Brembo's without spacers; it's what I currently have on my car) so it's very likely that the 9.5" CS5 w/42mm offset will also clear the 4 pot Brembo's and/or possibly require only a small spacer to fit the 6 pot. Regarding wheel diameter... from other's experiences all I've heard is you need 20" wheels to clear the later model 6 pot calipers.

I use the 4 pot Brembo's. Best brake upgrade I've ever done and only cost me about $125/side incl exchange fees. Got them from O'Reilly's.

Again, If I were you I would contact a reputable wheel/tire shop and ask them what would work in your situation. Someone like Forgeline should be able to answer your questions.

Finally, here's an explanation (see video) and a little bit of tech (see attached) on the subject: https://forgeline.com/latest-news/tech-how-to-measure-backspace-and-offset.html

Good luck

If you’re going 6 piston, to be safe, I’d use a 20” wheel like DieHarder mentioned above. My 19x8.5” AMR wheels had more than enough depth to clear the caliper, but the ID of the wheel hit on the edges of the caliper. The 6 piston brakes are massive.

As i Mentioned in my post, i can assure 20s will clear top and bottom wise, 19s ive hears some will, some wont, they are indeed a massive calipers, and yes 20 tires are a premium if you go with something decent especially if they are wide like 305

I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to do the write up. I used your list to gather my parts, but unfortunately in my situation the calipers didn’t clear. I expect there to be some issues when doing modifications so I worked around it. I think it’s a great write up and will help many people who don’t have thousands of dollars to do brakes. If I had my AMR wheels in a 20”, this would be a cake walk. I didn’t mean anything bad by posting my specific situation. I just figured it may help someone in the future who may have my wheel setup. Thanks for doing the write up in the first place.

No worries, thanks for kind words!, for future reference for all the readers, if you are not willing to upsize to 20s, you can go to 4 piston 11-14 brembos, and their rotors

There are 18's out there that will fit. Expect to drop $$$$. I have the big 6 pot Shelby Wilwood brakes. My forgerstar 17's actually clear! Not so much about size as it is manufacturing. Forged wheels are more likely to fit as well.

20201116_151556.jpg 20201116_151520.jpg

Edit: Racestars. Only a $400 difference.

I was going to say this. the shelby rims I have aren't forged, but they are light weight at 24lbs and flow formed. Cheaper cast wheels are going to be thicker on the inside diameter and heavier so they are strong enough to not break on every pot hole.

Admittedly, the AMR wheels I have are cheaper than all of those and probably why I had my issue with fitment. I think the “style” may play into it some as well. Not 100% sure. But I am very happy to know the forgestars fit because that’s on my list in the future!

I have Apex EC7 19x10's on a 2009 GT and there is plenty of clearance with 6p S550 Brembos in front.

This is mine I did about 2.5 years ago....
These are my street 20" wheels up front. However, I test fitted my Forgestar F14 skinny wheels and they cleared my brakes perfectly. I have the 6-pot S550 calipers btw.

Hey fellas, i think it is not a surprise to anyone that stock s197 brakes are as* to say the least. So if you were thinking about upgrading your stock brakes to something better and not sell your kidney in the process or your calipers got bad and you need a replacement or rebuild - this will be the best route without selling any organs :D. So lets answer all the questions that usually come up and also at the end decide what we can do with the rears as well!

Question 1: 'Do I need any modifications or brackets for 6 piston fronts?'
Answer: Once and for all - s550 6 piston brembos are a DIRECT fit on our cars with the right parts! (05-14)
Question 2: 'Do I need a bigger Master reservoir or cylinder?'
Answer: No you do not
Question 3: 'Do I need to upgrade the brake lines?'
Answer: No you do not, but I highly recommend to do so to eliminate mushiness since you already there
Question 4: Fluid: My car is 5 speed TR3650 so i have to use DOT3

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: For this project you need:
s550 6 piston brembos - does not matter from what year
13-14 gt 500 15 inch rotors, DO NOT BUY S550 ROTORS, the caliper wont fit right and you will need washers
s550 6 piston brembo brake pads
Steel lines s197 for 05-14 - Recommending getting the ones with round fitting to avoid shaving corners off from rectangular one, same thing goes for oem lines - they will need to be shaved

BE aware of the wheel clearance, 17 and 18 will not clear the brakes - they are massive!
19s and 20s will (depending on the offset), spacers may be needed
My setup is
20x10/11 Velgen VF5
+33mm + 55mm, i think, might be wrong with offsets

I did not need to use spacers, also off topic, but with this setup you can run 265/35 fronts and 315/35 rears without rubbing Nitto nt555 fronts and invos rear :D

With that question out of the way, lets go into a part list!
Disclaimer: I got all my parts through Rock auto and those are links and names i will provide, but you can choose your supplier

Parts:

Rotors:
RAYBESTOS 681047PER (High Performance) R-300 High Performance
Cost: 92$ per unit
View attachment 83531

Calipers:

Left: MOTORCRAFT BRCF431
Cost: 186$ + 50 core charge (refundable)
Right: MOTORCRAFT BRCF430
Cost: 186$ + 50 core charge (refundable)
View attachment 83530

Pads:
POWER STOP Z261792 {Z26-1792} (High Performance) Z26 Street Warrior
Cost: 73$

Lines:
Power Stop BH00115
Cost: 108$ front and rear

Harware kit: 15-22 6 piston harware kit
Be aware - brakes wont come with pins for pads, you have to get the kit
Cost: give or take 20-25 bucks

This is all you need, Total: 757$ + tax,
857$ + tax if you don t return your old brakes.

View attachment 83532

Additional:
If you want to do the rears - the best way would be:
13-14 GT 500 rear rotors 14 inches
Adapter bracket to offset the caliper

Brake line kit from above

Use stock caliper and pads. You can go without a bracket but you will need to drop diff and a bunch of other parts and replace the hub, caliper mount and a bunch of other stuff (not worth it- go with bracket)

Hope this was helpful, brakes are great improvement over stock without spending an uncomfortable sum, let me know if you have any questions!
Thank you so much for your post!!
This helps a lot. I found 2022 Gt500 calipers front and rear. And I was wondering if the front calipers could fit. Since I think they look a little different and they maybe are different compared to the GTs.
Is it just the same or will it not work with your list?
Thank upfront for an answer!

Hey , this is for Gt performance pack 6 piston brembos, I’m pretty sure 2022 gt500 uses different brakes, so it won’t work , check online if they are different brakes

I have an 2012 Mustang GT with the 2016 Mustang GT PP1 wheels. I installed the 6 piston Brembo brakes, but the issue I was having is my wheels were not deep enough to clear the Brembo caliper. I added 1 inch wheel spacers, which help with clearance, but my wheel still hits the studs so it doesn’t let the wheel fit flush which leads to vibrations while driving. I was told by a shop that my wheels aren’t hubcentric and that they’re incompatible with my setup. Would like some feedback as to what would y'all do in this case. I know the best thing would be to find wheels that have the proper offset to clear the brakes, but didn’t want to upgrade the wheels.

Try putting the rear wheel to the front. The rears are wider and have a different offset. If anything you could go to the dealership and buy 2 rears so that you’d have a square setup. Unless you want staggered.
