Not doubting there knowledge and experience. Just don't see the point of not putting in all new while the heads are off. Do the job once! As a customer if you are doing your own work and pull the heads you have alot of your own time tied up. If in fact they tell you all the guides don't need to be replaced and then a short time down the road a guide has an issue, you are going to be pissed. I kno0w I would be.
Yea I share many of the same thoughts as you have on this subject matter,
But each person does have certain goals and or money restrictions, or in my case life gets in the way and finds must be moved around and sometimes I need to cut corners to get it done and going .
Not saying that was the case ..
but I just try to look at all angles because a lot of times a lot more is going on than what meets the eye..
...
....
But none the less

Got the springs and retainers out of the old head. I was smart and brought the head inside and used my daughters craft table to do this as comfortable as possible... And it was still uncomfortable
still a pain..
But none the less a win .
Now for a break

Yes I do see the valid point of replacing all guides and possibly valves too but when I was just a repair overhaul and id already racked up a 4k bill with them, there didn't seem any point as its a summer car realistically and I know I wont put anymore than 3k miles a summer on it. I've prob said this all before in the forum, the car already is owing me money compared to any potential sale price if that day ever comes. If I had a bottomless pit of money I would have built a forged bottom end and done everything to the last in prep for possible boosting. I really was caught out at the current prices of engineering works are charging compared to a few years ago. In hindsight I should have put coyote rods in it at least but sourcing 90% of the parts which came from USA, customs and postage alone was eating up funding like no mans business lol. I really went from dreading the whole thing at the start to loving building it after I got it back despite the financial hardships of it all

Maybe a bit of useful info to you Whitmanink that my block did need shaved even though the engine showed no evidence or history of overheating. I cant remember how many thou without going over the engineers report. Guy that worked on it said he has seen blocks leave the factory this way but I knew by his chat he was surprised how much it needed, Maybe explains why H gaskets are fairly thick on these to allow for that?

A mls head gasket (multi layer steel) flexes and will most definitely seal an uneven block ,,but of course there are limits to how far ..
I just got a new cylinder head off Amazon and it's flatter than my square ,, so it's true ..
Blocks shouldn't leave the factory that's out of square because they would be out of spec and get hit by quality .
But none the less , I don't know much of the matter , im just a meathead that gets lucky evey now and again

Looking good!
yea thanks,,,
altho it may seem like it didnt take long to time it,, (it didnt)
i did however get it to the point i was ready to pull the pins on the tensioners
until i realized i didnt install the old vvt solenoid and the body to mount it to the end of the head,,
so i had to remove the timing and the vvt phaser to install it ,, then redo it all ..

Ok so the heads on and I'm slowly putting everything back together.. got my exhaust hooked back up, the steering shaft back on .
Timing cover back on and new valve covers..

I also got high heat paint to paint the valve covers .
Needless to say it's not. Wat it looked like online .
It's ok tho cuz I wanna see how the paint holds up and then I'll color match it.

One note about the cylinder head..
It is the exact same head.but...
It's the 09/10 style plugs ..
So my one side is the earlier plugs and my driver side will be the new style

Is there a number or marking that is visible on the heads that distinguishes them from the old style to the newer style plugs? My 2005 got a new long block from the dealership in 2012 and I would like to know if I got the newer style heads. I know I still have the older coils but there are no coils on the invoice.
I know I could simply pull a plug but I would rather not take a chance snaping one off if I don't have to.
